Discovery 1 - ZF Auto output shaft play

    Hi

I am hoping that someone can let me know if it is normal for there to be some play in the output shaft of the ZF auto?

On removal of the transfercase, its weight was resting on the output shaft. I haven't been able to see what might have been damaged in the removal (looking in workshop manuals for the disco and zf auto etc)

I am planning on a trip to WA from QLD in the middle of the year and i don't really want it to fail when i am away. if i was staying in Brisbane, it wouldn't matter so much

    THanks

    Richard

It will most likely have a bearing and seal of some kind, ZF6 has a ball or roller bearing not sure about the ZF4.

Yes, they have plenty of axial play so no probs there , but use a couple of guide bolts ( 100mm or so long ) when refitting the transfer case as you will damage the input seal otherwise

You'll never get the transfer case to line up and engage ... Just grab some long bolts from your local bolt and fasteners place and cut the heads of them .... and slot the bolt so you can screw it in/out

I whipped the transfer case out of mine a couple of days back ....

see the guide bolts I used for removal as well as refitting

I know the old 3 speed auto's from falcodores would have heaps of up/down/side to side play on the output shaft when the tailshaft was removed.

This play was normal and ok.

I would suspect ZF to be no different.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
