    Light truck tyres

Ok, here’s the current situation. Stan the Van - a 2007 Sprinter with 5000kg GVM has a set of Continental Conti Van Contact 200’s with a load rating of 107 and shows max load as 975Kg and 925 for duals. Stan has duals on the back. Need new tyres as I don’t trust these ones and they are bloody aweful in the wet and give me no confidence at all. My experience is reflected by other reviews so they need to go - Continental ContiVanContact 200 - Tyre Reviews and Tests

Given the axle loads being close to max capacity at all times, this doesn’t leave a lot of wiggle room. Max axle loads are 1850Kg on the front at 3200Kg on the back and they are a couple of hundred Kg under on both but with full water tanks and a bit more crap added, will be close to GVM and axle loads at all times.

Tyre size is 195/75/16 which I will need to stick with as anything wider won’t work with the duals up the back.

My thoughts were to go with the Toyo Nanoenergy Van - the successor to the TO8 which I’ve run before, and these have a load rating of 110 so a bit more wiggle room. Problem is getting them in this size - zero stock anywhere at the moment with no ETA on new stock.

So, what are peoples thoughts? Any suggestions on a 195/75/16 LT tyre with at least a load rating of 110. Cost isn’t an issue - I want to trust and rely on what I go with, not tiptoe around wondering if the next pothole will be the end of one of them.

    Any input appreciated as always.

    TIA - Gav.

Question - I have found some 195/85/16’s with a load rating of 114 which is great but wondering how much of a difference the extra 40mm in height would cause? They’ll fit, but wondering how the vehicle will drive with them on. I only use 6th gear on the freeway and 5th most of the time on B roads which is sometimes a bit too low and 6th is too high so thinking this may work in my favour.

Tyres are a Maxxis UR275 - UR275 Premium All Position Truck Tyre | Maxxis Tyres

Any thoughts on these or Maxxis tyres in general - I’ve never run any so open to input here.

    Thanks.

I've been running Maxxis tyres on the Oka for a couple of years now with great success, a bit larger size though in 315/75R16 Razr Mt's. Also have Maxxis LT 185R14 on a two trailers with no problems. Another trailer has Chinese Hifly 195R14 LT's and they survived an outback trip earlier in the year, also run Hifly's in 205 R16's on the wifes XC70 Volvo wagon and they've survived a couple of years running on the potholed bitumen and dirt roads around here. The Volvo previously had Pirelli Scorpions which were an excellent tyre with a light AT pattern.
We have a Maxxix dealer in town so a lot of locals run Maxxis on a huge spectrum of things from cars to farm machinery.

    Hi Gav,

I have Maxxis 771's on the red POS. Similar tread pattern to what you have with those tyres on your 101.

The 771's are great in the wet coz the tread blocks go all the way down to the main tyre surface, i.e. they won't retain water even down to the wear bars.

None of this really relevant to your question apart from the fact that I'll be lucky to get 40k out of them. Wear is even all over and all around. Seems like the compound is somehow softer after they're 1/4 worn.

I've had Kumhos go for 110k in the past, Bridgestones for 80, etc.

I have Kumho AT51's on my ute, which chews through rear tyres and they're wearing really well.

They also have full depth tread blocks all over and do LT in some sizes. They're next for the RRC.

    cheers, DL
