They work on the same principle as the trutrac and pretty much the same design.
From memory the trutrac has 4 pockets where as the Ashcroft has 3, but this has allowed them to have a better bias ratio. ie you can lose a bit more traction before they stop working.
Mine have worked flawlessly for at least 7 years on my defender and I don't recall anyone having any issues with them, so yeah they are robust.
Once you pick them up in your hand they feel anything but lightweight.
In sand you will find that the Traction control has to work so much less than it did before and this keeps you going foward sooooo much more.
