Thread: Ashcroft center ATB differential

They work on the same principle as the trutrac and pretty much the same design.
From memory the trutrac has 4 pockets where as the Ashcroft has 3, but this has allowed them to have a better bias ratio. ie you can lose a bit more traction before they stop working.
Mine have worked flawlessly for at least 7 years on my defender and I don't recall anyone having any issues with them, so yeah they are robust.
Once you pick them up in your hand they feel anything but lightweight.
In sand you will find that the Traction control has to work so much less than it did before and this keeps you going foward sooooo much more.

The Ashcroft version actually has 6 gears/side, both the centre and rear diffs. The Trutrac only uses 3/side in Rover spec.

The TruTrac probably has a better thrust bearing setup for the side gears, but the Ashcroft mimics Quaife's version and seems to work ok.
I have one apart on the bench atm and the design is fine.

Make sure you only use a non-LSD fluid, and preferably a GL5 manual transmission/transaxle fluid for best biasing/performance.

Would GULF WESTERN 85/140 non friction modified be okay ??

Way too heavy.
The t/case only needs an xW-90, especially with the ATB, preferably a 75W-90 as oil feed holes aren't huge.

I happen to have a dusty 5L container of the afore mentioned Gulf Western on a shelf - looks like it’ll languish there for a while longer
