Roamerdrive into 130 converted to 4bd1/t running an r380

As the heading says. Anyone have any thoughts on fitting a roamerdrive to my 130. I'm thinking this would negate the issue of towing in 5th gear . Baz

    roamer drive follow up

Sent the manufacturer an email. As I'm running a disco transfer case I cant fit one. I need to revert back to a defender one or a Disco 2 transfer case. Baz

    Hi Barry

If the transfer case is from a Discovery II we can provide an
overdrive. If the transfer case is from a discovery1 you are out of
    luck. Ray

So asking for pardon in advance, and at the risk of a significant highjack, anyone able to explain the fundamental differences between D1 and D2 transfer cases?

I have a vested interest in the answer for my RRC which has a Borge Warner Viscous Coupling that I want to change to a Transfer Case, but will be mating to a 4HP24 and D2 TD5, not a LR V8!

Hi Gavin, for fear of perpetuating the hijack - and providing useless information - I replaced my Viscous Coupling with a D1 transfer case in the LSE. Mated up to the existing ZF. It was from a 1998 D1 I think. Had the V8 in the LSE at the time, but a few years later on fitted the TC to another ZF (from a D1 diesel) to mate up to the HS2.8 (300Tdi). I recall having to change over a shaft in the V8 ZF but I just can't recall whether it was for the ZF to accommodate the D1 TC or the HS2.8.
No idea about D1 and D2 TC differences, except that early D2's had a centre diff but not the levers to operate it.

I probably would have fit a gearbox that you could tow in top gear with without any issues Roamerdrive into 130 converted to 4bd1/t running an r380

I can tow all day quite comfortably in 4th and within reason 5th without issue. I'm happy with my r380 behind my 4bd1/t. Saying that I'm always searching for a possible better option. I happen to have a d2 transfer case just have to remove it from a d2 I have for parts. I'm also happy for people to jump /hijack my posts as we all learn/ Baz

Perhaps look at the Tremec tr4050 conversions available for the 4bd1/lt230.

Do you know of an adapter for the 4BD1T/Tremec TR4050. I heard Advance Adapters are going to make one but have stalled on the research.

I fitted a Roamerdrive to my TD5 110 over six years ago for this very reason towing my 3 ton van, the setup is faultless and the best mod I have done to my Defender. I find I leave the overdrive engaged for just vehicle driving around town and the extra legs in each gear makes a much easier drive in traffic, as for towing I only use it with 4th gear which gives it almost the same gear ratio as 5th gear so easy highway speeds at about 2,200rpm and know very low gearbox oil temps compared to before fitting the roamerdrive.
As I said well worth the money and hopefully it will save any R380 repairs on my rig that others may need towing without this unit installed.
