The ZF autotrans was rebuilt at 272,000kms.

I read a while ago that the D2 trans cooling works fine - will try and find the thread. But yes mud blocking the cooling and the crappy connections are weak points!

I have abandoned any thought of pursuing the underbody install of a transmission oil cooler in my D2. Whilst fine for a street or drag car there are just too many negative aspects for it on an off-roading 4WD vehicle. So Ive purchased a PWR brand 21 row stacked plate & fin oil cooler that Im planning to mount forward of the AC condenser and behind the grill.

Does that have proper pressure fittings such as multibarb or screw down etc? My experiences are that just slip on and a hose clamp fittingd blow apart for the D2 ATF coolers.

Yes it has ports that accept proper pressure fittings. Ill be using JIC or -8AN fittings.
