Alternator Voltage Regulator YR-818 Brushes 200tdi 110 Defender

    Hello All,

I need to replace the alternator brushes for my Defender 110 with a 200tdi 2.5 litre engine. I have only been able to find the major part; the alternator voltage regulator product code YR-818 which has the two brushes fitted to it.

Does anyone know if you can just buy the two brushes?

Also, what tool is used to undo the three bolts. None of my Sidcrome or Kincrome sockets have thin enough wall sides to fit into the recess to reach the bolt head.

Apparently, the YR-818 is also A127 TYPE UCB150 for Massey Ferguson tractors!

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Can't help with reg disassembly unless you can get a pic looking down the holes.

Just take the reg with brushes in situ to an auto elec, a good one will look at what he has that is same or close and if need be you just sand them down to fit.

They will have a tool to open the reg.

I got a box of 10 to suit the 55amp Bosch alt in my pos for $11. They're a smidge too long so I just take a bit off with a grinder.

    Don't overthink it.

    Hello DL,

Thanks for the reply. I was going to take the brushes to a local auto-electrician. However, to do so I have to get a tool to fit the three bolts that hold the whole regulator unit on.

I vaguely recalled a screwdriver-like set with different bits. I did a search online and found some Metric hex socket drive nut screwdriver sets. I will track a set of these down tomorrow and take the parts off the alternator. Then take the brushes to the auto-electrician.

    Kind regards

    Hello DL,

Yes and get charged the minimum cost of labour because they have to work on it to undo the three bolts. Here is a word association task ...wounded charge, bull, a and like.

    Hello All,

Some more research later at various parts suppliers and Land Rover forums and it seems that the more modern alternator for the Series 3 six cylinder 2.6 litre petrol is the same one recommended for the 200tdi. Part number RTC5084 or a 17ACR type. Various suppliers describe "applicable models" as Land Rover Series suffix B engine on Diesel, 4 cyl petrol, 6 cylinder petrol, Defender Range Rover Classic.

With some reverse thinking .... Maybe the alternator out of the Series 3 six cylinder can be swapped into the Defender 200tdi? The good thing is I have one of those sitting in one of my Series 3 ex-Army Land Rovers and it works! I also have a Series 3 diesel fitted with an alternator. One forum's post mentioned having to change the style of crimps used to connect the vehicle's wires to the alternator terminals. Anyway, it may allow me to get the Defender running again.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

That looks very much like the marelli unit on the 300tdi, if so you should be able to swap the discovery 1 100 amp unit on.

It's a much better unit and even has proper bearings and the like!

    Cheers

    Hello All,

    Well that was fun!

I just returned after taking the half of the alternator with miscreant bolts in them to four specialist tool suppliers, a car part place, and Bunnings. All these visits were unsuccessful - no one had a tool that would fit into the recess and undo the nuts. As the last specialist tool suppler was across the road from an auto electrician I took the alternator to them. Yes it is a specialist tool - a very thin walled tube spanner; and no they do not have one. I was given two options that they do. Either grind down a socket so it fits; or get a die grinder and enlarge the bolt hole recess. Or combine both.

The alternator is in half because the previous owner drove the Defender through their bull dust cattle property in Western Queensland while the power steering pump spewed power steering oil all over the alternator. This occurred over a number of years. The whole alternator was caked in oily bull-dust. All the holes were chock-a-block. The best way to make sure the alternator was cleaned properly was to split it. Unfortunately, the only way to join it back together is to take the alternator voltage regulator out; bolt the alternator back together and then refit the voltage regulator as the last step of reassembly. This means undoing and doing up the three miscreant bolts.

    A grinding I will go.

In the meantime it looks like I will be substituting in an older alternator so I can correctly set all the v-belts. and get the vehicle running again. All the fun of the fair.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Had a few of those brush boxes off, and really can't remember any issue removing the screws holding it on, just std 1/4 drive socket set from memory.
In all honesty, new alternators are quite cheap and it's barely worth stuffing with old ones anymore.
