That could be a split link or an outer link has peeled of the pins.
The Citroens are all 1970 or after: DS21 and SM (and 2CV which don't run chains), and yes continuous chains and much heavier links than what appears to have plopped out of the Defender.
The Peugeot 505 SRDT is 1985 and Id be surprised if the chain in that was as lightweight as what I found, so I suspect the LR oil drive chain.
BUT - if they do not run a split link chain, how could the link end up in the sump without a catastrophic failure? Maybe said failure did happen, in the past - but does not give me much confidence in whoever did repairs. Personally, I'd clean out the motor of any chunks of loose parts before reassembly..
No, nobody else has ever used my catch pans!!! (I'd be shamed to let them, they're not pretty..)
Cheers, I appreciate the replies

Already answered, but as far as I know almost all engines made in the last fifty (or more) years with timing chains are continuous - but that does not mean that one has not been replaced at some time by an off the shelf chain that does have a joining link. And if the chain was being sized on the spot, that could well see a stray left over link ending up where it should not have.
oh!
my first reaction would be to remove the sump asap.. not only to check (and do) the oil pump bolt(this way you KNOW it's been done) .. but more so remove the sump to see what else may be built up in there.
... maybe the rest of the chain in there too! [biggrin]
The missing link was found in a Td5. Just take the rocker cover off, rotate the engine by hand, and do a full inspection of the timing chain.
Whilst there, also check the tensioner guides - they will start to break up before they fail completely.
To check the oil pump chain - this would be sump off. So good time to replace the infamous oil pump bolt that comes loose.
Now would be a great time to pull the sump and check the oil pump bolt anyway, as others have mentioned
thanks for your responses.
damn wasting $100 of fresh oil! I'm not going to feel comfortable running the engine without pulling it apart to eyeball, though.
