    Defender R380 Gearbox breather blocked?

I took my Landie up country to a very competent mechanic mate of mine as it was leaking oil from the usual gearbox & transfer.
It all was pulled apart - the R380 Mainshaft oil seal collar took a bit of removing ( see pic) and a quality seal for both the gearbox & transfer fitted, plus "o" ring. We then took the defender on a drive to the local shop -(18k each way) & bugger me - it is leaking worse than ever. Back up on blocks & removing just the transfer & running the gearbox for a minute in 5th we see the oil is leaking badly from the gearbox, however on removing the seal, it looks perfect - same with the collar.
Is it possible that the breather is blocked causing a pressure build up & oil loss? Has this happened to anyone? I'm back in Melb & my mechanic mate is skeptical.

In case this thread appears in a future search...
It turned out that the breather was fine, the problem was that some retailers ( 2 in Melbourne) sell below par quality part no FTC500010G seals. They are probably unaware that these are - for a better word- counterfeit. They are branded "ENGLAND" and the packaging on one even says manufactured in UK.
The correct Cortex seal is impressed with the part number & once fitted ( exactly in the same positioning as 2 others) it proved effective.
It was a lot of work to find 2 seals that leaked. We took the precaution of testing the second & third one with the Landie on stands & the transfer box off.

That's a pretty disappointing and frustrating scenario, at least you've got it sorted now.

    Happy Rovering!
