    Exclamation

    Hi Shack,

I've installed a standard VDO 5bar gauge and it's hooked up to a MADMAN EMS3 unit. These are pre configured for 2,5, and 10 bar senders and I can confirm is set on 5 Bar.

At Idle the boost is reading 25psi, yet to go for a drive this morning.

    Cheers

The boost will definitely not be 25 psi at idle, so there's something wrong there.

    It should basically be zero.

    Hi your correct.

Just after starting the car for the 1st few minutes when the engine is still very cold it seem to sit on 25 and go up to 29/30, after about 5 minutes it drops down at idle to 21/22 and goes up to 29/30, when the car is warm it drops down to 0 and goes up to about 25/26.

    Cheers

    Correct, something is wrong.

I wouldn't be buying a another new MAF just yet.

On the log I had there was difficulty in correlating a few things.

From the age of the tune you are running I'm thinking it could be a BAS, they were pretty famous early on for boost boxes, does yours have one? Or a MAF "cheater"?

    Cheers

    Hi mate,

I got the map from Toombie and it’s been great for the past 9 years or so. I’ve done a few short runs and saved them all as individual files. Will download and share them tonight.

I was not sure what the BAS or MAF bypass is…

Do you recon it’s time to upgrade to a more modern map? 9 years later and I guess the maps are a lot more refined.

Ps, I’m not overly power hungry just want the Defender to run well (and tow well).

    Cheers

    That'll be good.

It's highly unlikely that anything went wrong with the map/tune you are running, it's most likely a failed sensor or air leak or restriction.

BAS = Bell Auto services in the UK.

The MAF is mass air flow sensor, on some "bigger" tunes the MAF would go out of range, so some extra hardware was fitted to lie to the engine ECU to stop fuelling issues.

At the end of the day, black smoke is caused by insufficient air to cleanly burn the fuel injected.

We've just gotta find out why.

    Cheers

Was trying to install a windows 7 VM so I can run the excel app from nanocom, still trying... need an older version of excel

    anyway here is a csv.

    thanks heaps again25002.CSV

This is what the log looks like graphically.

You can see the discrepancy between MAF aircharge and MAP aircharge, and the fact that MAP aircharge never exceeds what mine would be doing at about 900 rpm, should lead us to think that either both sensors have failed, or that there is an intake leak after the MAF but before the Map sensor.

The MAF immediately following the the throttle down is also suggestive of an issue after it but before the MAP.

So intercooler hose off, or split intercooler.

These options would be leading the pack for mine....Aircharge2.jpg
