    Hi all,

Boost on the sender reads about 2 psi higher on average compared to the reading from the MAP sendor/

In 3rd gear flat our at 2800 rpm the map read 13psi and My sender (bench tested) reads 15 psi

The same in 4th, steady going uphill, 7psi on the map and 9psi on my sender

    Cheers

So taking this into account along with the MAF reading and smoke... You are losing air somewhere between the turbo air discharge and the MAP sensor in the manifold.

Where is the standalone boost sensor plumbed in?

    Hi mate,

I tapped in on the tube that runs into the waste gate from the metal pipe just down below it, inbound to the intercooler. Hopefully I can get into my mechanic this week.

    Cheers

    Morning, latest update.

All seems fine with the physical air flow in the system, no holes, blockages. Machinic found a slight hiccup every now and again with the revs and cleaned the sensor on the drive shaft.

There seems to be a bit of a blue tint in the smoke and this could be due to a bit of glazing, I'll do another fuel consumption test. I was just thinking if there is a bit of glazing could that lead to the high temp I see in the EGT?

I have also noticed there is a bit of fluctuation in the ambient pressure from the air filter box, I'll clean the sensor just in case.

    Kind regard

Ambient pressure reading will vary with airflow, I've seen a differential of up to 8 depending on tune and air intake setup.

I'd ignore yours, it's nothing unusual.

Try unplugging the map sensor and going for a drive.. That's all I can suggest, see if it makes any difference.

Sounds like mostly the smoke is at low revs

Check out the video, best with sound up high
Diesel - Made with Clipchamp_1660716683638.mp4 - Google Drive
if it does not play, download it and then play it from you hard drive.

Sounded like the car was backfiring. Could have been background noise. Have you checked your red ECU plug for oil contamination?

your boost pressures also seems low (13-15 psi) I’ dimagine with a good tune you should be into the very high teens low 20’s. More air to help burn your fuel delivery.

ignor first para above it was the road joins.

    Hi,

I'll check the red plug and post back.

Was attempting to test the wastegate and found a hole in the boost pipe leading to the boost gauge. Note the pipe had what seemed to be oil in it, not much but enough to drip out. I fixed that, took her for a drive boost is only back to a max of 12, My boost sender reads the same as the (Turbo pres - ambient) * 0.1450... from the nanocom. I've adjusted the wastegate from 13 threads back to 11 threads, will take test it out when I take the kids to school.

I was able to apply up to 20psi of pressure for a second or so to the boost system with a high volume mountain bike pump (it then leaks out) the wastegate did not move, I'll remove the wastegate and test it with some direct pressure to make sure it free and can move as it should (thank for the advise Shack)

Fuel consumption is down to 8km / L and measured over 3 refuels from full and driving and average of 130km each time.

    Latest update,

Got some help to put a stock tune back on. Smoke is gone (and so is the power). It does drive well and has enough power in the city, struggled up Bulli pass though on the way home on Sunday. Diesel consumption was 8l / 100km, will post back tomorrow if that has improved. Now with the standard stock, the car is back to standard fuel and it's also running a lot cooler.

Boost is still down I believe, the most I can get is 12psi in 3rd pushing it as hard as possible. Mechanic has checked the air flow and could not find a blockage or leak. He had another td5 defender, luckily it had a boost gage and similar age, the other defender was reading at 14psi at full boar.

    Back to the drawing board

Installed a second hand turbo (in a good condition). Boost pressure has unfortunately not changed so the search still goes on.
