Bar Bar green wolf are you only show

Can anyone tell me the difference between a sports bar and a roll cage?
I know the basics, a rollbar or cage is welded or bolted through the chassis thus requiring an engineers report and certification and in NSW a blueslip before the vihicle is legal.
A sportsbar is strictly bling bling with no safety requirements or certifications. It is there to look the part but serves no other purpose.

Whilst at the expo on the weekend I took a lot of photo's of the military defender with the sexy seats and full cage. This cage from what I saw was only chassis connected at two points (behind the drivers and passenger front seats) all the rest was bolted directly to the body of the vehicle

I realise this is a show car but is it an accurate copy of the military vehicles ?

Would this only be classified as a two point cage?

Would the extra bars serve any real purpose in a roll over just being bolted to the body with high tensile bolts?

Being a safety device would a roll bar or cage be load tested?

Could a steal sportsbar be used as an anchor point?

    Hi Dobbo
I would think that the bits you see bolted to the body on any Army vehicles would actually be bolted to framework "under the skin".Makes for easier removal/replacement and would be as strong if not stronger fitted that way.

I realise that the military vehicles are far from a standard Defender and do have built in protection but that one looked like it was bolted straight through the body. If it had protection bars I would have thought the diagonals would bolt into the bar or be welded onto the bar not bolted through it

They pick up on internal bracing behind the bodywork....

So you get a bodywork sandwich

Take a peek at the safety devices site for details.

Having rolled an Army fender in 2001 on exercise Tandem thrust at Rocky QLD I can tell you they work well and no damage at all to either of us from vehicle crush..but I have a nice scar from the barrel of my plastic fantastic has it fell from its centre seat holders into me...Army should know not to drive at night with NVG's no depth perception.. especially shallow holes that are 3ft drop offs...... but they gave us another one and off we go again...MM I miss the days of unlimited Fenders...Almost wants me to join up again to start ripping off goodies..only if I was a "Spanner" RAEME would have a field day..hey weeds
