Thread: To glue, or not to glue?

To glue, or not to glue?

Seems to be a range of opinions about if it is necessary to glue tyre repairs.
Some say yes and some say no.
Some tyre repair kits include a tube of flexible glue while others do not.
I used glue the last time I did a repair on one of the Defender's tyres Some time ago, but not on a recent repair on a Mazda tyre.
    Do glued repairs last better?
Does using glue on the plug make it less necessary to later glue a patch to the inside of the tyre?
As Shakespeare might have said if he was still around, to glue or not to glue - that is the question?
    What do you think?

Are you sure the "glue" in the kit isn't lube?

    Mine are lube.

I second that, I'm pretty sure the stuff is a lubricant/sealant. I used a 10+ year old kit a while back to plug repair a tyre and the goop was as fresh as when it was new. I don't think any single part glue would stay that way over an extended period.

My kit is glue, little squeeze tubes marked "rubber cement"
I've never had a drama with the plugs, using glue.
But yeah once those tubes are opened they dry out pretty quick. I bought a heap of spare tubes, treat them as a single shot use.

The glue would act as a sort of lube until it sets?

I have an old repair kit with a tub of lube, I'm suss on using it for some reason, just doesn't seem right covering a plug in some waxy greasy stuff.

I've never used a puncture kit.

I've only had 2 punctures in 30 yrs of bush driving , and each time some super helpful person has elbowed me out the way to do it for me.

My kit hasn't been opened and I'm off to the Birdsville races and a few other interesting places south , in a few weeks , so I better check it out.

Check the plugs as well, mine deteriorated and fell apart.I noticed as part of a check before a trip.
Some of the air hoses on the ARB air compressor are rubbish as well, and also detiorate.
They will replace them if you take them back, luckily mine is the better type, which is blue in colour.

Even if they aren't opened, the contents evaporates. I went to use one recently and the never opened rubber cement tube was dry or empty. I bought a new tube at a motorcycle accessories store.

When you say repaired, do you mean repaired properly with a mushroom plug from the inside, then yes glued, or correctly chemically vulcanised.

If you are talking about a temporary plug installed from the outside, then I never have, as it needs to be removed and repaired properly.

I'm envious of you, I've had times where I would be fixing maybe 5 a week, I guess our conditions are more "extensive".

    Agreed.
Plugs are only a temporarily fix .
If I get a puncture that needs to be plugged I will swap out the flat tyre (especially if it is one of the steerers) for one of the spares and get the plugged tyre fixed properly at the next tyre joint I come across.
The plugs Do fix the leak But personally I don't trust the that much.
