i haven't pulled one of these bearing out, are they sealed, if so sealed bearings normally don't have too much grease in them, if the plastic stuff sealing the bearing comes out easily you can put a bit of extra grease in them to extend there life, i havn't done this with these bearing but did it on a mowing deck with success.

They are sealed but once you have drilled some holes in the circlip for removal it isn't a big problem

Hope you succeed better than I have this week Inc. I Still have to rip more things out and then try and put it all back. I don't the the RTA will smile at me driving without the panels on.

anyone know if an early defender v8 steering pump will fit the tdi disco?

nope Tdi steering pump is a special animal
they cost $300 ISH
wife did one driving home, got home saying car smelt funny burning smell & steering went heavy :eek:
Bearing had colapsed taken out the seal & all the oil was gone :eek: WHAT! why did she keep driving? (answer is FEMALE)

being tight and poor a few years back I tried to replace the bearings in it, but was't happy with the PS wine after :(
so I did it again (thinking I had damaged a bearing or set to much preload) still noisey :mad:
woried it would die again somewhere I then I bought a new one :(
Bit of a sh*t to get out, esp having to take off hose and drain oil down your arm
unfortunately once you've done it afew times you get quicker at it
water pump is way easier

Oh Inc, I'm an air tool addict;)

this mongrel of a thing is now making woeful noises like a belt squealshing.. but doesnt appear to be a belt.....

only when cold, dead quiet when warm...

got me scratching my head....

anyone else seem these symptoms ?

what sort of fluid Inc ?
The Caltex Cold Climate/PAS14315 dedicated PS fluid used in later models and the ACE system has a couple of anti-noise additives in it to stop pump squeal and moan that normal ATF doesn't posses. (although the Transmax Z ATF I'm cvurrently using is dead quiet, too)
I've been able to buy a 4 litres from dealers a couple of times now, as Caltex used to only sell it in 20l drums.
Could it be worth a fluid change ?

I have replaced the bearings in a number of 300Tdi idler/tensioner pulley and they all had C-clips not circlips and there is no way that you could drill holes in them, as they were lucky to be 2.5mm wide.

I file or grind a groove in the the hub - down to the outside of the c-clip groove. This is easier at the gap between the ends of the c-clip.

Then tap the c-clip around so that one end is under the newly created groove, where you can lever it out with the blade of a small screwdriver.
