    Off Road Tyres

Hi, I'm new to the forum and off roading and was wondering have we got any advice on tyres, I seem to have settled on the choice of All terrain BF Goodrich, or All terrain Wrangler Good Year, any information or advice on which you think would be the best would be greatly appreciated. After speaking to my local tyre fitter/sales he told me that the Wrangler has a Kevlar side wall which I like the idea of. Thanks in advance. Mark

Hi mate. What vehicle, what sort of offroading, do you do a lot of towing? I have liked all the tyres I have had over the years. From original stock XPC by Michellin to my current 2 which are Nitto Ridge Grapplers and Wrangler Duratracs and a lot in between including Pirelli, Maxis, General Grabber etc. Pretty good ability to compare as these were on D1 and D2 simultaneously save for the Nittos that are on my ute. So for me the best agressive offroad all terain tyres I have had are the current Nittos and Duratracs with the Nittos being slightly better onroad (the ute handles a lot handier and faster onroad through corners than the D2 with the Wranglers in it, and the Nittos always feel secure deapite that wheras it takes a bit but i can get the Wanglers feeling their limits just a little on the D2). I have a mate with the Geolander AT which is both readily available and reasonable in price (and I have witnessed doing very well offroad and on road in twisty bits of cornering). So plenty to choose from. Personally I would steer clear of BFG and Coopers and would always sacrifice a little bit of ride comfort for LT designated tyres. Cheers

    mmmm a tyre thread......opinions aplenty

the best tyre I have ever used is the KL71Khumo

its muddy but dont let that fool you, it has been the most competent , durable....incredibly durable , iconically quiet , soft riding and good handling tyre I've used in over 30yrs of offroad driving.

I haven't been fortunate to fit them to my current vehicle....waiting for two sets h/t and a/t to wear out by which time I will have another vehicle and another set to wear out , but if Khumo still make them I will buy them again.

Falken Wildpeaks are very good and that's one of the sets I'm waiting to wear out , but I will buy Khumos when they do. The Falken are better than Bridgestones.

You will get more opinions and there's nothing wrong with what you're looking at.

The Wildpeak has followers aplenty in Aus. They seem like a very good tyre. I had one dealer tell me that they had changed the compound and the mileage just wasn't there but personally not sure and they may have returned to harder wearing compound so who knows. The biggest thing effecting tyre choice at the moment is simply availability. Cheers

I have run the BFG AT for over 20yrs,done 100's of thousands of K's all over the countryside, not a single issue,or repair.

The KO2 is a completely different tyre to the old KO,better IMHO,in many ways.
    I have run both.

Many of the reviews, and opinions around are based on the older model.

    Anyway,just my 2 cents worth.

Nitto is also another great tyre, but availablity is an issue.

Sounds like your need might be for a LT AT with a not too aggressive tread pattern as it seems likely most of your driving will be on bitumen. Is that right?
The BFG AT is a fairly aggressive tread pattern, but a high quality tyre.
I can't comment on the Goodyears.
There are many options and many good tyres out there.
One not mentioned above is I am running Hankook Dynapro ATs in LT, which are strong, but not too aggressive.

Depends on what your wanting out of them, there's off roading, then there's off roading, then there's real off roading.

All-Terrains are a compromise for when the vehicle will be used off road but also needs to do significant on road tasks well.

Personally I'm a fan of the BF Goodrich All-Terrains. I had a set of KO's in 285/75R16 that lasted 105,000km. They were not on the TWI yet but were past eight years in age. I replaced them with KO2's and have been happy with them.

Of note is my KO2's are 2019 year of manufacture. I've heard that tyres made since 2020 or so have had issues.

Rim size will dictate your options. 275/55R20 on my L322 provided several options but don't really fit the L320. I've since gone to 255/60R19 GG AT3 on D4 rims for what I consider a better overall package for my use which includes outback travel. You have the option to fit after-market 18" rims which barely allows 265/65R18, with 265/60R18 better fit. A brother runs 265/50R20 on his outback touring MY08 RRS, currently trying the Falken AT3W.
