The problem is that the spring in the "clutch assembly" on the starter is not pulling the pinion right back, and if I stop with the nose downhill or apply brakes it is touching the ring gear. When it does this it simply spins on the free wheel except when the engine kicks back as it stops, it spins the starter backwards, which is what makes the noise. It has neatly trimmed the teeth back by about five millimetres, although the starter works perfectly normally.
Does anyone know if you can pull the "clutch assembly" apart? The manual's exploded diagram shows it as one item, so I suspect not. Also, does anyone know if you can get the "clutch assembly", and what it costs, or is the alternative an exchange starter and any ideas for costs on that?
