    Matching a trailer track

    Hi Guys
Hope to order an axle and springs for a trailer project.
I want to match the track of the Disco2.
I will enquire about using a D2 stud pattern but expect to pay $$$ extra to cutom make such hubs, especially as they will have electric brake type hubs.
I think I will end up with Disco1 wheels as I have them and the hubs are available off the shelf.

WHAT LENGTH AXLE DO I NEED????????
The rear track of the Disco2 is 1560mm(by the book and check measured).
    Disco1 rim is 210mmwide,has a backspace measurement of 135mm.
Am I correct in saying 210mm less 135mm gives an offset of plus 30mm?

So do I tell the trailer shop I want an axle that will give me a track of 1560mm using rims(disco1) with a plus 30mm offset??

Incase Disco2 hubs are the same price, what is the offset of a standard D2 alloy??

Help me get my head around this one,I want to understand how it works so I know if the trailershop is selling me the correct axle.

Get hubs with commodore pattern as they are the same as D2 but rims to suit maybe either hard to get or expensive.

    Hi Loanrangie
    Are they the same????
All the trailer supliers sites list Commodore as 120mm PCD,I thought disco2 were 125mm PCD. The studs on a commodore hub would be too small??

    Trailer track

    Hi Andrew

Assuming you are going to use the trailer off road, go the trailing link coil suspension. You get get a much smoother ride ( arrive at the campsite with unbroken eggs etc ) and you won't be confronted by the problem of ripping leaf spring hangers out of the chassis like I have heard them do in harsh road conditions.
The coil suspension system allows you to set the track you want, at least the systems I have seen.

To keep the soft ride, rather than using heavier coils for when you wish to cart a load of rocks fit polyairs.

I note one of the posts mentions holden hubs?? If thats the case careful using holden hubs and stub axles as they snap off just inside the outer bearing if used in heavy off road use. The coil suspension kits usually come with beefier stub axles which are rated in tonnes rather than kilo's.

There are a number of outlets in Perth for the various kits.

    Regards

I have been told the same answer about the 125mm PCD on the disco II hubs. Not sure whether the Commodore PCD is the same as Al-Ko specify the Commodore as 120mm PCD although there may be a difference between the early Commodore and current Commodores.

When you buy trailer components the PCD and the hubs are not necessarily inter-related. LM Bearings are Holden bearings and have a reputation of snapping at the outer end and because of that they are only rated at 1000Kg. One theory about the failures is because people don't fit the thrust washer between the nut and the bearing, even though the new thrust washers are not machined and hardened like they used to be they are better to have than not. Unless you are a machinist and make up a real set. Slimline bearings are Ford bearings and are rated at 1500Kg. The next rating is the Land Cruiser bearings which has become the standard for heavier duty light trailers. They have ratings of 2000Kg and up.

The hubs can be bought with popular stud patterns or undrilled to drill the PCD / wheel studs you require, so it is possible to use standard Land Rover Parts for studs and nuts if you like.

Although the 120mm PCD on the disco2 wheel is the same as the Commodore, also note that the Disco2 rim centralises by the centre hole and not the wheel studs. Also, the wheel holes and studs are different, and you will probably have to change the studs on the hub to suit the Disco2 wheel nuts (Which despite looking the same, are different in the thread to the other Landys). The offset on all factory Disco2 and P38a rims is 57mm from the centre line, with the offset bringing the wheel in closer to the body work.

OK i've got a link to a thread of my experiences with this, it's in the trailer section here, get blank drums and have them drilled to suit the D2, Melbourne trailers did mine, the PCD is 120mm, offset is 57mm same as the BMW X5 and VW, commodore, it's the stud size thats differant 14mm, also AL-KO should be able to do it or any trailer place that drills blank drum hubs, give AL-KO in Melbourne a ring they seemed to be the best to deal with, the guy i spoke to said that if Melbourne couldn't do it to call back and he would do it for me.

LandyAndy, i'll measure my trailer axle as my trailer tracks directly behind my D2 more luck than anything, i didn't measure it i just hoped it would fit, if it didn't then i would have had to change my axle, but i was lucky i guess.

Really it shouldn't be that hard but i guess it's one of those Landy things that because it's a LR it's got to be hard

    Thanks Guys
Ive got a set of Disco1 rims,if it ends up being too hard I will go D1.
    In the last 4WD monthly,there is a D3 with a camper/caravan setup,very flash,pretty sure it looks like D2 rims on the camper,have a look.

So for a 4 tonne rating on a dual trailer you would use Cruiser bearings?
Just womdered as a friend has built a car/builders trailer with a 4 tonn rating but is now thinking of getting rid of it to build annother as he thinks its to high off the ground. It stis perfectly to the height of my tow bar and would make an excellent rough terrain trailer except for the overhang. Looks to have the clearance of most smaller/Jap 4WD out of the showroom.

You will also have to use a load sharing suspension setup for 4T.
