Just to reiterate the glass breakage problems.
I use CAV filters in the boat. After about three years of use, I came out one morning and found shattered glass at the base of the filter. No impact, maybe overtorqued the bolt at the last change and then temp change was enough to do the damage.
Differences are its unleaded and a salt environment... eitherway for the $25 it cost for a cav alloy bowl (which I replaced it with) under a 4wd I would be wary of a glass bowl?

I have run a CAV filter for 10 years as I drove my defender around oz just after I bought it and you can buy the filters in most outback servo's.They are a good upgrade. Pat

I fitted a Brown Davis auxillary (side) tank and was required to fit in-line fuel filters before the tank selector valve.
Following the advice in this thread, I incorporated a CAV filter in the sedimenter at the rear tank and got rid of the in-line filter on that line. Now I'm looking for a shorter CAV filter unit to replace the in-line filter on the auxilliary tank line.
Since I generally use Baldwin I emailed them and they advised:-
" The micron rating on the BF825 (this is the CAV) is 4 nominal with a 15 absolute. For the BF587-D (this is the original spin-on) the micron rating is a 5 nominal with a 20 absolute."
So, once I have 2 CAV filters fitted, I figured I could remove the original spin on filter in the engine bay. Side benefits would include cost and reducing pressure on the lift/suction pump.

A very worthwhile mod to the CAV filter set up is to reverse the fuel flow - connect the fuel feed line to the outlet port, and the outlet to the inlet port. This mod causes the fuel to enter the bowl first and then flow up through the filter, increasing the ability of the filter unit to trap water. I run both my 300 Tdi Discovery filter and my Isuzu Defender filter this way. I also use 796 elements instead of 296 elements doubling the filter area and more than doubling filter life.

When I had the sedimenter head off ( I had to re-position it) I notice that there was a small hole drilled in the outlet moulding. When reversing the inlet and outlet pipes this would become a by-pass route for fuel. OK if your still running the original filter as well, but it would need to be blocked if you are running the CAV filter only.
Im a bit lost on this one :confused: do you just buy the filter and adapt it to the stock sedimenter housing etc? of is it a whole new assembly?
A combination of the two. You buy a new-type combo filter/separator with a glass bowl, for ~$70 (truckline or QLD diesel spares), then fit the metal bowl from your old sedimenter instead of the glass one. You need a longer bolt.Quote:
