Not pushing a product here, but the Sept 2006 issue of Australian 4wd monthly, has one of those "Supercheap autos" infomercial things on exactly this topic. Good info actually...with lots of pictures so folks like me can unnerstand.
Even with extended breathers the water may get in. Water and air act the same, ie they take the easiest route. I have my breathers run up into the roof pilar and during the Tweed Heads Floods we spent a bit of time in water up to the bottom of the windscreen at times ( thank god the rangie is isuzu powered ) pulling out a bus full of people. The diffs were cold when we entered and full of water when we finished. As some one else mentioned dont forget your wading plugs for bellhousing. Basically it cost nothing to check your oils if you have been swimming.

I'm with jason, over here in the West most of the water is in the Indian Ocean, dry creek beds or puddles mostly so if I do partake a little water crossing occsionally I drop all the oils anyways. I figure if it can leak out, it can get in.
