    SC80 reverse charging.

    Hi,

    I guess this is essentially a question for Tim (Drivesafe), but thought I'd post here as it may help quite a few.

    I have an SC80 and believe it's a mk3 and should support reverse charging, however I'm having trouble getting it to go into reverse charging mode, I'm just wondering what set of circumstances need to be in place for it to start, and if there is a way to trigger it manually?

    Hi James and if you have a Mark III SC80, you will have a Bi-Coloured LED ( Both Red and Green LED ) and has the Reverse Charging function.

    The Reverse Charging function is automatic.

    In what situation are you trying to get reverse charging to work?

    Hi Tim,

    Our main battery is getting old, I was leaving the car parked outside all day for testing, we have a solar panel on the roof with a victron mppt 75/15 charging a HVT- 50D auxiliary battery, The victron has been in float mode for hrs @ 13.47 volts and the SC80 is flashing 4 red and 1 green, the main battery is at 12.6.

    When I start the car the led goes green pretty quickly.

    In fact I just did it as I'm typing.

    The main battery is now 14.8, the secondary is 13.46 and the led is constant green.

    Both batteries should be the same voltage shouldn't they? I have literally only just seen this right now!

    Maybe I have a wiring issue...

    I'll check into that side of it.

    Hi again James and that is not functioning correctly.

    Start by checking both sides of the fuse or circuit breaker on the side of the SC80.

    Hi Tim,

    Have just tested, the 80 amp mega fuse has blown.

    I think this is a MK3, I have had a few earlier versions as well that had the circuit breaker, but I've wrecked those too (the breakers), what is causing this? Just excessive draw?

    Ho James and since I have changed over to the fuses, I have only come across this once before.

    Not sure what blew the fuse but I suspect the Optima Yellowtop had something to do with it.

    I your auxiliary battery an Optima?

    SSB HVT-50D.

    I've put a circuit breaker on it for the moment, may buy another mega fuse and see what happens to that I guess.

    If that is one I supplied, then you would have had a spare fuse supplied with it.

    If not, that is an MIDI fuse and should be able to get one from somewhere like of JayCar

    Sorry.. I keep calling it mega..

    I didn't get an extra fuse from memory, but I'm pretty sure it was a rush job for you to get it all here before we headed off on a big trip!

    Thanks for your help.

    As to my original question, is there any way to tell if reverse charging is happening other than using a multimeter?

    I couldn't find any info on it.

    It's quite straightforward, when you apply a charge via the auxiliary battery, the LED will flash a number of short Red pulses and then a SHORT Green pulse.

    When charging from the alternator and main battery you will see the LED will flash a number of short Red pulses and then a LONG Green pulse.

    NOTE, if the Traxide isolator has not turned off, prier to starting the charge from the auxiliary side of the isolator, you will still get the LONG Green pulse.
