Toyotas don't have problems???

A friend of mine owns a workshop and its always full of Toyotas that have problems that they should not have.
A friend of mine is on his second clutch at 70,000kms in a 100 series.
Recently back from the cape. Went with a mate who took his manual 100 series diesel (1HZ) cruiser, 2002 model with about 130k on it-I took my auto 98 tdi disco with similar milage. Following is summary of repairs needed on each, both during and after the trip:
Cruiser:
Drain/refill gearbox after water entry
adjust/clean handbrake shoes (after it stopped working and nearly rolled down a creek crossing entry into the disco after he got out)
Fit new disc brake pads as old ones almost down to metal-despite recent toyota service(within 6000kms).
Starter motor problems-removed to find just dirty solenoid connections
leaking front t/c seal-replace
clutch/transmission noise-will require g/box removal to investigate
windscreen
Disco:
Water entry rear diff after breather line was sheared off by tyre missile
-drain refill diff, repair line
lift/dry carpets after slight water entry via door seals(Good landrover design having seal joins on lowest point!-repaired with silicon)
windscreen
replace headlight bulb
leaking engine oil cooler hoses-replace
AND...Disco 10.3lts per 100k
Cruiser about 16lts per 100k (of course heavier car and more gear weigth too)
It was a pretty hard 4wd trip with lots of water, mud, slow stuff and enough corrugations too.
Isnt it interesting this myth that toyotas dont have problems?
cheers all
now planning a Simpson crossing for next year![]()

That is one advantage of having the handbrake drum on the drivetrain as on the Disco. ( and GQ Patrol I believe ). You can be reasonably sure your emergency braking will work under most situations.
I think landcrushers basically run prado brakes.. chopping out pads & rotors is quite common.

WOW....60% more fuel!![]()
On a trip like that you could have paid for all the repairs to the 100 with the fuel savings in the Disco![]()
D4 SDV6, a blank canvas
That's fairly normal for a TDi - 9.5 to 10.5 litres per 100 k depending on how mucch low range work etc.Originally Posted by wardy1
Milage really depends on road conditions, weight, wind obstructions, towing and driving habbits. Our TDI auto is well serviced. On our Cape trip in June towing a camper trailer and having a 245/75/16 mud tyre on the roof rack we averaged 14l per 100k and got as bad as 19l to 100k the day when the rpm was alway around 3000.
things to repair:
windscreen
front indicator
headlight
spotlight
cracked nudge bar
flooded cd player
broken antana
alternator
door lock
bent rear guard
battery
and I haven't got the mechanic report yet.
From all the people we spoke to on the trip and at all the towns along the way the roads were the best they have ever been and were quite a supprise after all the stories you hear.

Slunnie,
Re the cracked chassis near the seering box. I presume your's is a S2 Disco, this cracking is a dealer recall repair and should be done for free.
