    Wading plugs for Disco

I saw somewhere in another post mention of wading plugs for the bell housing and timing chain.

    I have a 96 Disco and 86 Rangie.
Which of these need wading plugs?

Can anyone tell me what these do?
    Are they necessary?
    What happens if don't use?
Where I can get some (I am on the Gold Coast) and how to fit them?

    Thanks
    Keith

Which of these need wading plugs? disco yes (can't quote on the rangie I've never had one)

Can anyone tell me what these do? stop the crap getting in
Are they necessary? yes if your going deep enough into muck (water & mud)
What happens if don't use? you get crap in your clucth & timing belt
Where I can get some (I am on the Gold Coast) and how to fit them?
any hose & fitting shop (or pluming supply) they are 1/4BSP (from memory)
to fit climb under car and screw them into the hole,
you only use when in the muck, then take out to let the oil leaks out
    Jase

    Thanks
    Keith

you only require them if you have a manual transmission.

I have an auto and put a plug in the belhousing....but Ive been told there really isnt a need to as the auto is a sealed unit....but call me a fussy P###k if you like but I just dont like the idea of it not being pluged.

I also put one into the timing cover....but I feel this is a must. Dont really want mud and crap in-on-around the timing belt , pullys & bearings.

When I do a serivce or something I will pull them out and see what comes out.

Also they are 1/4 BSP, I used Brass plug's...mine cost $3ea from a bearing, type shop.

86 rangie should be a v8. You did not say what engine is in the disco

The v8 has a timing chain which runs in oil, so it is fully sealed and there is no wading plug in the timing cover.

The 200/300Tdi have a timing belt and a drain hole in the timing cover to allow leaking oil (crankcase seal) to drain out. You should fit the wading plug before water crossings or mud holes.

The v8 bellhousing has a drain hole, which the wading plug is screwed into for water crossings or mud holes. They also have another tapped hole nearby, which is used to store the wading when it is not in use.

The diesel bellhousings also have a drain hole which should be plugged for water crossings or mud holes. The diesel bellhousing does not have the extra tapped hole to store the wading plug.

All of the wading plugs are 1/4" BSP.

    Disco is 3.9 V8

Ok thanks for the advice - off to buy 2 plugs

However I suspect last xmas I got sandy water into the bell housing when it rained and flooded out camping exit.

Is there anyway to flush the bell housing?
