My remote key fob thingy is the one button type (95 Rangie LSE). It has ceased working, which I have isolated down to the metal part inside which (when the button is pressed) makes contact between two points, transmitting a code.
The metal thingy is missing.
Anyone have any idea what the hell I'm talking about and if the 'metal thingy' is available sperately anywhere ?
Also on both the left and right hand sides of the 'switch' concerned, there are two sets of contacts. (ie one pair per side). Either of these when bridged send the signal, which alternatly opens or closes the doors/locks.
Anyone ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

I've got the same alarm - but I don't want to pull it apart just yet - but my sisters remote that I repaired the other day had a similar problem. The small button assembly is just a standard PCB (Printed circuit board) tactile membrane push switch.

The missing piece of metal is both a spring and the contacts. On most remotes, or other electronic equipment (inc PC's) the switch either is sealed or has a metal cover that clips the two halves together. If you can salvage somthing similar from some electronic junk or an old car alarm remote either transplant the innards to your alarm or carefully unsolder the old and resolder a new one.
If your soldering skills are RAG (Rough as Guts - like my welding), remember that a 1996 2 button model can be coded to your alarm (provided it isn't armed) ( I think)
Here is how:
