take it out and play with it,,
IF it breaks down,, deal with it then--
lifes too short--
And at the end of the day....
A $1100.00 spare ECU is the very best insurance....
Solves all your woes
I have a spare for the Disco and the Defender
Would I take them anywhere? Yes... Am I worried about it? Nope!

Can you just plug it in and have it work? I thought it had to have test book give it injector numbers and a few other parameters so it will work correctly.Originally Posted by tombraider
Have you had these programmed to your car as spares?
Expensive parts to have laying about.

Thats a good question,do you?? I've thought of doing this, after all, whats $1100 for peace of mind, insurance if you will,if you're stuck in the middle of nowhere in a life or death situation, such as being 1 week into a 2 month holiday!!Originally Posted by disconut
Yes, it does need programming to the vehicle, but once programmed can be removed and stored (in my case in the vehicle in a sealed container).Originally Posted by disconut
It gets the Injector codes and then 'learn security' to link it to the vehicle.
However!....... I have the ability to remove the security from TD5 ECUs meaning they will just drop in and work. This will allow one to run on another vehicle, even though the codes are wrong. It will still run OK, just not quite as emmissions compliant.
Which when in the middle of nowhere, I dont care about... I just want to get home!
But. for peace of mind, definately not a bad idea...
I actuallt have a spare for my Defender and the Disco Auto here.
Cheers

I pick up a spare ECU for my disco for $50 on ebay, and works fine, just plug-in-playmind u my ECU isn't as complicated
Matt.
One problem may be that "ECU problems" are often sensor problems or wiring problems, not ECU problems.

The good thing about my disco is that you can work out what is causing the problem, i.e what sensor etc, with just a mulitmeter, probably the only time I'll need to replace the ECU is if it gets wet or some sort of power surge.

Sounds great. Now heres a cunning plan, can you rent these out as a security blanket for travelling AULRO members?
Those on long trips could keep it in a sealed container until required. If not used, return it at no extra cost other than the rental fee. If opened and fitted, a charge is made on its return to evaluate its integrity and any repair costs needed.
Just a thought.
