    Welding Experts on Here??

My 2.4 90 has a straight pipe from the turbo back...all Terrafirma. Normally makes a nice whoosh sound but yesterday was very loud. Discovered the pipe that goes onto a square plate had cracked right round so the exhaust was sitting to one side of the turbo outlet.

The exhaust square plate mates to a square plate on the turbo outlet.

Not sure if the pipe is stainless and the plate is ordinary steel. The pipe isn't very thick may be a mm or less.

How difficult to weld these back together (the broken crack lines up perfectly right round) and what sort of welding type would be best?

My mate is an expert and was looking over my shoulder and he reckons if you are unsure about the S/S and mild/cast steel, a normal welding rod will just run off off S/S or even if it sticks it won't really penetrate, so you are better off using a multi-purpose/ferrous metal rod. Also check the zorst brackets/hangers as vibration has pro'ly causing the crack.

Got hold of a mate who welds for a living. He is going to tig it up for me. A bit odd but he lives where I am flying for work tomorrow so I have chopped in half for the suitcase. He'll get it back together and has all the wrapping material for me to bring home on the plane mid-week.

Will post photos of repair...he reckons that pipe is so thin a stick welder will probably blow a hole in it while you work out the power setting required. Fingers crossed.

My mate did actually say to watch out wire brushing it as you might just end up chasing it back, being so thin. I only said weld as I thought that is all you had access to, my mate did say there are a few options, silver solder, braze, obviously mig or tig even better.

Yeah I say tig weld but really have no idea what they are or what is best! Would love to be able to weld but it is something that normally doesn't pop up with Landy repairs for me....touch wood.

It looks like you need a flexible section in that exhaust to stop that happening again.

It has one below the break point...you can see it in the top pipe in the suit case. Wondering if a gasket between the turbo and exhaust pipe flanges would be any help?

The flexible section needs to be closer to the the end flange that has broken off so that engine movement doesn't flex the pipe as much.
There should also probably be a mount closer to the engine to support the pipe and prevent the weight of it loading the mount to the engine.

its odd, i have fitted dozens of these (terrafirma brand) to 2.4 Defenders without drama.

*I do get them all ceramic coated before install.
*it looks to me (correct me if I'm wrong) that the bottom of the exhaust as it goes past the chassis is actually very close or touching, if so I could believe this is an issue.

May be unrelated, but thinking now would be a good time to thermal wrap that top exhaust section.

Yes does get close to the chassis. Would make sense to cut flexible section and mount that to the flange?
