Here's a potentially highly dangerous problem in my 2004 Td5!!! Three times in the last 5 days the car has just stopped! engine still ticking over but no accelerator necessitating me coasting to the side of the road or thankfully into a side street! Just imagine what might happen if this happened on the freeway or highway [Main North Road which I ply each day!] Had it trucked to the dealer after the first 2 times [late at night!!!! in the Adelaide Hills] "Fixed" but the next day the same thing AGAIN!
Past history:- surging before Easter - flushed fuel system - drained tank - renewed all filters... O.K for the Anne Beadell/Connie Sue/Great Central Road/Rudall River N.P./Canning/ but on the Gibb River Road surging again and all the way home via Kununurra/Bungle Bungles/Tanami Track/Stuart Highway - using cruise control cured the surging! Prestige [L.R.dealer Adelaide] replaced the potentiometer - no effect on problem - replaced CPU - no effect but after 3 weeks in their workshop!!!!!!! car was O.K. now a month later these breakdowns and it is back in the dealer's workshop. Has anyone had similar problems, what were the causes and most importantly what were the solutions?

Not the dreaded oil-in-the-injector-harness-spread-to-the-engine-harness-then-on-down-to-the-ecu problem is it? Have you checked the red plug one the ECU for oil at the back of the plug? Replacing the ECU would not have fixed this problem. I know this should have been fixed post 2003, but you never know.

if it overboosts the turbo.....it goes into limp mode with similar symptoms to what you describe....
it does this to prevent damage to the engine......not sure if this will store any fault codes on the ecu though....

Excessive boost will invoke fuel cut-out (usually around 2500rpm) and will leave a fault code in the ecm.

The TPS doesn't use the same connector at the ECM as the injectors so it might not be oil in the loom.
Noting that the WSM states that the engine will only idle if the TPS fails, that cruise control works OK, there is surging and the problem is intermittent, I would be looking for a bad connection, chafed or broken wire somewhere between the TPS and the ECM.

Sounds like throttle pedal to me.

On the Disco there's a connector in the wiring loom (header 0294) just upstream of the TPS connector - behind the fuse box. The connections in there might be loose. For the TPS it joins the 5V supply wires and earth returns to & from the ECM.
