My posts appear to be invisible to you, but if you see this one, then yes, either the ignition switch or the wiring to it can be one reason for intermittent cutting out on the Defender.
The last one here like that was found to be just a loose spade terminal, it was cutting out when hitting potholes.

Well, after three days of pulling the car apart and checking every electrical cable, connector, socket, relay and fuse that were remotely engine related of fuel delivery related I couldn't find anything wrong on the electrical side of things.
Next, I pulled the fuel pump to see if there was any dirt build-up, but the fuel tank and pump were unbelievably clean for having sat in there undisturbed for the last six years.
I also decided to replace the air bleed valve in the fuel filter housing and re-bled the fuel system. Low and behold, the engine runs quite smoothly and did not cut out in my first half hour test drive; time will tell I guess.
I always associated the air bleed valve with bad starting issues, but it looks like it cause the issues I had as well. Anyway, this part is now on my regular replacement schedule every two or three years.
