Nope no guage for that. ECU manages and worries about that itself for me or I just don't know its bad so don't worry.
G`day all, when we head back to OZ in October I am thinking of bringing my ECU with me and getting Bruce work some magic on it.
Does anyone who has the upgrade have an EGT gauge, as this is what worries me. As out here in Dubai on a big climb in the dunes, you have your foot flat to the floor for quite a while in +40 deg temps with the A/C on, in 3rd or 4th low with the engine on the limiter.
I don`t want to worry about having to concerntrate on keeping one eye on an EGT gauge, just the dune I`m trying to climb.
Any info anyone has on max EGT whilst being pushed hard would be greatly appreciated. I do want more power, but don`t want to trash an engine, as it already get a fair work out on the limiter as it is.

Talk to MickG about it. He has a Davis ecu on a 99 TD5 Disco and he can get it to shut down if he pushes it to hard towing a trailer etc. From what I have seen I would stick with a standard ECU for heavy sand dune driving as I think you will find the EGT will increase rapidly and the ECU will decrease power to protect the engine that = you getting stuck half way up a dune???.
Just a thought I hope it helps
Regards Justin
I would not do it.
For piece of mind, just go with bigger exhaust and intercooler.
I have the remapped ECU and while the power is nice, it is a pain in the backside (4+ visits to Bruce and it is still a dog in low range -- surging etc)

Hmmm, this does make for some interesting reading.
Why does it shut down when pushed hard, I did`nt think there were any protections built into the ECU.
Noddy thanks for you honest answer, I also know of another non-satisfied customer who went back to the std ECU. You hear lots of people raving about how good his work is, but not many bad ones.
JE Engineering in the UK also have a great reputation for re-flashing ECUs, I also think there are several dealers who will incorporate the upgrade without effecting the warrenty.
I wonder if EGT is one of the perameters that Bruce and the others monitor whist doing the re-map or just the dyno reading and exhaust analysis.
I had been tempted to chip it but have come to the conclussion that if I do anything it will be a re-mapped ECU so as all the perameters are monitored, not just an increase in the injector pulse length.
Mine has never shut down when pushed hard and trust me i push this Disco hard, and tow a 1.3t camper everywhere, i pushed it up some pretty steep country in the High country and while others around me where overheating (a cruiser and a GQ Patrol) the Disco never had any issues.Originally Posted by cols110
I have to agree with Noddy though the surging is a pain in low range, it was fixed once but i lost some power with the new mapping so i had it remapped back for more power.
Oh i forgot no don't have an EGT.

Bruce does a couple of versions. I had the surging too, he re-flashed it with the milder upgrade, problem solved.
Doesn't go quite as hard on the highway, but easier to drive around town.
And the magic number for EGTs I think is 750 degrees C - thats when aluminium melts..

...if, for nothing else than the best sounding Td5 I've ever heard. Noddy's little 2.5L 5-pot sounds like a V8 on song when you're behind it. Wonderful!Originally Posted by noddy
