    ZF auto slipping???

I finished putting my new rear diff in today after destroying the old one at Mt Dissapointment on Saturday. The diff is great, but the auto box in my '89 Rangie is slipping in 4th gear. It hunts between gears and then goes into neutral for a few seconds before settling on a gear.
If i manually select either 1st, 2nd or 3rd it is fine and operates normally.

So what are the likely problems?
Is this going to cost me big time?

    Its done 195000km's.
The slipping has only started since i blew my diff. The rear tailshaft locked up and i had trouble getting drive to the front, it seemed to lock the whole drive line.
Could it just be a slipping belt?
    Any idea's???

Update: I went to my local auto transmission place today to get the bad news. After a lot of technical talk, basically it needs an overhaul. I was quoted minumin $2300, but most likely around $3000 to fix and overhaul.
    Is this reasonable?

The other option and the one i'm tending towards is fitting a second hand zf out of a disco. I've been quoted $1250 for one with less than 100,000km.

What do you think i should do?
    Am i getting ripped off?

    Vogue,
Thats sounds about right for a ZF, I was quoted around the same for my D2, that was just for the box though, labour to R&R i was doing myself.

For the short term & a quick cheap test i would replace the oil & gearbox filter in the trans to start with, make sure the g/box is full as it can do many strange things with not enough fluid.
This may last for a little while longer & give u some time to save
    Cheers

Ive got a 1990 rangy still running original untouched 3.9/ZF and nearly done 300,000 k's. Still running great believe it or not.

Got worried the other day as when it was cold it would slip and go into neutral and carry on..all it needed was another 200ml of fluid...never knew it was so critical.
