    Unhappy Main shaft oil seal...?

    G'day all,

After the romp in Lithgow the other weekend, I found the rangie to be leaking copious ammounts of oil from the gearbox area... Upon closer inspection it appears that the main shaft oil seal has failed (between the gearbox and transfer case) as the oil is leaking out of the front seal on the transfer case and the oil level (in the tansfer case) is very high... I'm not certain at this stage as I'm no mechanical genius... But I've heard this has been a problem with the 4 speed manual boxes (it's a 1976 rangie) and all the symtoms point to this being the problem.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or heard about it?

also, where would be the best (and cheapest) place to get it fixed? (around Newcastle, NSW)

I would have a go at it myself, but I'm a bit pressed for time at the moment... (and a car to drive in the meantime...)

any info would be very much appreciated!

    cheers,
    bryce

my old rangie had a balance pipe from the gearbox filler to the transfer case filler

all that had to be done was drill and tap the both fillers fit a pipe all done

I've had a Rangie with a leaking gearbox - it was front input seal - and you can't avoid having to remove it to fix it, and since yours is a bit old, then you are going to have to remove it and replace some stuff. The LT95 is pretty simple to remove, but if you haven't got the time ( Say the weekend to do the whole job) then it's going to cost a fair amount of labour to do the job - the parts required are cheap. If you do want to DIY , then a) borrow a manual, you're going to need it b) Hire an engine crane, makes replacement of box easy. The seals are easy once you have the box out. Consider doing main output seals and bearings, and TC intermediate shaft seal as well.
If you can't locate anybody near you who is interested in doing your box, I once visited

JT Engineering and Performance 4wd: 2/2 Huntingdale Dr, Thornton, 4966-0590

in relation to a track rod they make - they seem to be extremly capable of doing a rebuild on your box. (They had rangies all over the place)

Hi broonski my disco was leaking from a shaft higher up on the T/C i pulled the T/C out in the last holidays and did a seal kits problem is now it leaks between the two like on yours, the G/B is full so it is the T/C that is leaking. Its not hard to get it out to replace the seal would take two of you a day to get the job done but like what happened to me you need to be super careful putting the case back in cause if you arent you can damage or move the shaft oil seal and it will leak again, like what happened to me.

Not a hard job to get out but i would recommened you replace any of the easier seals whilst you have the T/C out.

Alot of people will tell you that you need to remove the G?B aswell which is probably easier to replace the seal but not to get it in and out. The T?C will come away from the box all that is holding it in place is half a dozen nuts and bolts around the rim of it once they are undone it slides off, two of them you will need to get at through the hole in the floor from inside the car, and whilst that is open you will need to pull the High/Low selector off so you can remove the T/C from the car. Not a hard job to get out but is difficult to line up again afterwards. Matt

Just a note for Broonski: Ace is under the impression that this is about a 5 speed/LT230 combo - a 1976 Rangie has a 4 speed LT95 all-in-one box.
(Now if you really want to spruce up the Rangie - get a box from a later disco - 5 speeds and a really good TC)
