Personally, i would go with the used disco auto if you can get some warranty on it, $2500- 3000 is too much to spend on a less than $10k car unless you plan on keeping it for a few more years.
Hi all, got bad news about the auto in my '89 Rangie, it's done 195,000km and i've lost use of 4th gear. It slips in and out of 3rd and neutral.
So what should i do rebuild it approx $2500 -$3000 or fit a second had box out of a disco with about 90,000kms on it for $1250 plus fitting ???

thanks, but what do you mean by a higher lockup? Is that good? Why?
Sorry i'm a complete novice when it comes to auto transmissions.
Just means that the auto moves to overdrive at 80 klms rather than the early units that lock up at about 65 klms no big deal the later box is better due to this.Originally Posted by vogue
The zf is a good box as rule good to 400k.

My 89 Rangie torque converter locks at 88 kms an hour accoring to the manual, however it seems more like 80 on the road. My ZF was rebuilt at around 450,000 hard kms. Seems like the change over from the disco would be the way to go though and will be around $1000 cheaper.
