Isuzu 3.6 4bb1

Well finally there seems to be another with a 4bb1 engine.I have one in my beast as well.There ain`t no info on them at all.Google has not been my friend when it has come too looking up any info.But it goes like rocket and would pull the skin of several custards at once,so I`m more than happy with it.Would be better with a 5 spd though.It has a Range Rover 4spd gear box.Have not had the need for low 1st yet as it has so much torque.AS far as being related to the 4bd1 motor the only link is they are made by the same company.Our old motors have a inline injector pump,the 4bd1 has a rotary pump,compression is different,internals are as I have both read and been told are different.Bit like comparing a Land cruiser H diesel to a 1HZ diesel same family but worlds different.Ours is the one of the earlier, if not one of the first 4b series diesels,a bit of a dinosaur.The 4bd1 is a few evaluations along from our motor.Still far as I can tell the 4bb1 is still a good old motor.

I think you've got some confusion with the 4BD1 vs 4BB1.

The 4BD1 also has an inline injection pump, it is the same engine family (4B ) as the 4BB1 and the engine blocks are externally identical.
Bore is the same, stroke is different but both are direct injection.

The 4BD1 has never had a rotary pump, the 4BE1 is the only 4B series I know of that had a rotary pump fitted.

Hi there,

I have a 4BB1 which needs an oil cooler replacement. I have the cooler but have been told I need the timing settings for the fuel pump, which has to be removed to change the oil cooler.
Does anyone have the info?

Real easy.

There's a window on the front timing cover which is held on by two bolts. Undo those and rotate the engine until the strike mark on the timing gear (fuel pump drive gear) is visible.
At this stage, you can unbolt the pump and easily bolt it back up in the same alignment.

Anyone have this in their Series?

Hi guys- I have just bougt my first Landy, that seems to be an 81 Stage 1 station wagon, with messed up electrics(working on them), and a 4BB1 Isuzu engine. I am having dramas with the starter motor- it starts the engine if I short out the terminals, but won't work when I connect the battery. Starting to think it could be a 24v starter motor. Is this a possibility? and if so, what is the 12v one I need to buy?

Know I'm a bit late with the reply but thought it might be of use to the other 4BB1 owners. The 12v version starters for these engines seem a little difficult to find and expensive (Quoted about $980 from Isuzu about 5 years ago). If you are in need of a 2 bolt 12v starter to go on the isuzu bell housings, you can get an identical version made to fit a Daiwoo DC24 engine (used on a their lift trucks and excavators) Seem to be many available on ebay around the $300 mark. Total Source forklift supplies can also get them.

Also, after owning one of these engines for ten years in my landy, I can say they are bulletproof. I you need parts, a lot of external components can be swapped from the 4BD1 engines (which are a lot more common at truck wreckers) parts like oil cooler covers, thermostat housings (the bits that start to corrode after a while :( )
