I don't know much about them, but have heard they are not a bad motor, however have been known for breaking cranks in trucks. Hence the reason for the updated 3.6L (4BC1 or 4BE1 - can't remember which). But in a Land-Rover it should be fine.
Hi all, I have a ISUZU 3.6L 4BB1 in my Series 3, which i have not owned for very long. I was wondering if anybody had any experience with this engine type, eg. it's reliability or significant problems, and if there are any major differences from the 4BD1 apart from displacement?

No experience with them, but looking at the figures they are a higher speed and lighter weight engine than the 4BD1, suggesting they are a totally different design, although probably sharing a lot of common features but not parts. However, unless your S3 is a Stage 1 (with the LT95 box) or has a foreign gearbox as well as engine, I would be very surprised if the gearbox lasted long with a 3.6l, 4 cylinder diesel of any kind (it was designed for a maximum of 2.6l six cylinder petrol). Diesels are a lot harder on gearboxes than petrol engines, and fours are harder than sixes.

I have a 3.6L 4BE1 in my County. Good engine. Yes it is hard on the LT-95 (currently being rebuilt)

There is some confusion here between the 4BB1 and the 4BE1 - they are a very different engine.
The 4BB1 produced 72BHP (54kw) in most configurations, and was not a very high revving engine. It also has a bore/stroke of 102/110mm whereas the 4BE1 is 105/105mm. 4BB1 is 3595cm³, 4BE1 - 3636cm³.
The 4BE1 was the first of the more modern higher revving high output isuzu diesels.
hay ! have a 4bb1 that was a hydraulic power supply , ran for ever still runs , it use to power one of our directional drills . dont drill any more . was going to put it in a front end loader , cant find a #2 sae bellhousing , now am going to put it in a ford truck ?? mite work for around the farm !! those engines are built solid and with maintenance will out last me !!
