    yeah....I'm not aware of any "home" oil testing kit or whatever....I don't even know what it used to cost [never paid for it myself] but maybe a net search could yield some results....or at least tell you what the cost is for a private individual these days.....should be cheaper

    yea, a quick prod of the calculator works out if i change at 10 instead of 5 I save around 1200 over 280,000 kays,,

    ABSOLUTELY!! especially if you buy oil of choice in bulk or in 5L/6L or 20L drums from somehere like Supercrap

    my biggest concern is when ive done my 5,000kms......and i dont have the time to get the bits together
    or the actual time to change the oil....then i forget about it for another tankfull.....
    then i say to myself i will do it next weekend......then a trip or something else comes up.....
    and before you know it........im up to 7 or 8,000kms since the last change......


    its a bit easier now with this job as i know i will always have sundays and public holidays off......


    im just curious to see which oils are which........im definitely not gonna be sending lurchs
    urine samples to pathology every 1000kms to see what is happening when in the engine.....
    i cant even get myself to the doctors when im supposed to.....

    There is a trickle down effect - what is used in race applications will usually end up in normal vehicles when the technology becomes cost effective.

    The US trucking industry is also a driving force (pun intended) behind a lot of the R&D that goes on. I recently drove a 110 through the US, and when you get overtaken in 40+ degree heat by an A-triple, running 30+ psi boost, you know they must be running good oil.

    BTW - regardless of where the oil developers are based - they do have warm weather testing facilities. I have inspected a few of which, and they are capable of sustaining 55deg or higher, at anywhere from 0-100% humidity, for as long as is required.

    Whichever way you look at it your argument is flawed.

    p.s. Come and spend a summer in Karlsruhe or Freiberg, then let me know what you think about the German weather.

    LOL!!...I know the feeling!!.....I think [for what it's worth - probably not much!!....as they say - a free opinion is worth what it cost you!]...that most good modern oils have a lot of leeway for servicechange intervals......you could also look at the new extended service oils, rated A3[petrol] and C3[diesel] I think it is.....all Fully Synthetic and thus NOT cheap.....but I think they're worth it.....I'm running my [modern] LR's about 10,000 a year tops- but lots of shrt trips!.... but only changng the oil once a year! - but replacing all filters [oil/air/PCV] every yearly oil change

    Oil testing kits are available here http://www.e-monitor.com.au/ for $32.50.
    I've been using ALS for years, as I've mentioned on other threads, although I use a slightly more expensive test kit called 'Wear Check' which is the one aimed at heavy vehicle operators, both off and on road. As I've stated before, I'm able to take the Patrol well past 20,000km oil/filter changes instead of the book recommended 5,000km and the Landy goes 15-20,000km. I get both vehicles tested every twelve months, just to keep an eye on things.

    Hey Rick.....you're a goldmine of informaton ......sounds great @ a great price!.....but HOW good are those tests eh?....they can even tell if you've been swearing at your vehicle!!!...["spots operator abuse"] ....the miracles that modern science gets up to never cease to amaze me!

    Byron, like any test you are limited by the interpretation of the data. In other words, having the numbers is meaningless with out knowing what they mean.
    Last year on the Landy, the PQ index (total Fe count) went uncomfortably up for me, but wasn't flagged by the lab. Turns out the valve stem caps were failing. The iron particles were actually too big to really register in a normal ppm count, but at least the PQ picked it up.
    Also, you need probably a minimum of three tests over time to establish a trend on that engine, so that you can then see if something is on it's way out.
    I've actually contacted a bloke I know in the States to help me with my last two tests as the Silicon count has quadrupled on both engines without any apparent explanation. Could be Mobil re-formulating the oil (a silicon compound is used as an anti-foam), definately not air cleaners (which is the usual suspect, silicon oxide=dust/dirt) and the lab tells me that the silicon/sodium ratio is incorrect for a coolant leak. A bit strange.
