How does the service reminder work?

A little while back, I got a “Service due in 2300k”. I was about to do an Adelaide/Melbourne return trip (about 2000k), so should be just right. On return to Adelaide, the message disappears for a week or so then says “Service due in 1800k”. Ok, I’ll do a quick run to Broken Hill and back (about1400km) and should be good. On return, silence for a couple of days (or perhaps I just didn’t notice it - it only comes up very briefly) then “Service due in 1500k”.
Drove locally for a while, and the indicated kms slowly decreased then overnight went from “Due in 400km” to “Service Due”.

I won’t swear to the exact numbers in the above, but that was the pattern.

Any gurus out there who know what sort of algorithm is running here?

Pretty sure it's based on distance, but months could be factored in, too. But you should be servicing the car at at least twice the "recommended" distance. Assuming yours is a diesel, you should be changing the engine oil and filter at around 10,000km or six months. And by now you should be looking at using a 10w/40 oil instead of the "recommended" 10w/30. Full synthetic, but spec depending upon whether you have a DPF.
There's heaps of advice on here about when to change other fluids. And don't forget to regularly service the EPB.

    Thanks, DieselLSE.
My book specifies 0W/30 but I’ll look for 0W/40 next time if I can find it to the quoted JLR spec (Don’t know how significant that is).
There sure is a lot of discussion, (and many different opinions) about changing fluids, but I couldn’t find much about servicing the EPB (sadly, the search facility on this forum seems to by word only and not phrase, so I get a lot of “service” hits but no EPB hits).
Can you elaborate or point me at something?

Try The D3 D4 Sticky Zone for starters. In there you will find Key items for servicing and The AULRO Discovery 3/4 & RRS FAQ and other gems.
