SRS Airbag replacement D1

It is amazing that no here seems to see the value in SRS air bags, They are a safety device, Guess it depends on hour much you value your life and that of your loved ones. I attend a lot of road crashes and deal in extricating people from cars. I guess I see it from another perspective.

Not all cars have SRS bags, take our humble Defender, but those that do have them and the many people who have had injuries reduced through bags being fitted would be thankfull.

Perhaps its tha adage that it wont happen to me, but then if it happens to your loved one, how will you deal with that..

I guess its a toss up as always between safety and cost and a personal choice. ( as with cargo barriers.)

$4400 is a lot of money to find. I have decided to keep the airbags enabled but stretch the replacement for another 5 years at least. By that time I'll have had 10 years use out of it so resale won't be usch an issue for me.

Searching around Google it is very hard to find anything on general reccomended life of SRS bags. There must be a LOT of vehicles out there ( not just LR ) with bags coming up to 10- 15 year life.

I just checked with my local stealer for a 95 disco - drivers airbag $2100, passenger airbag $2700 plus fitting for both - surely someone in the aftermarket will come along for half the price - I do remember a post on a UK site sometime back that indicated the fitted price for a drivers bag was about 350 pounds. So it may be just the usual stealer price hike in Australia.

I have a theory on this too - the law requires parts be made availble up to 10 years after production ceases - the manufacturers can reduce the parts that have to be kept in stock by inflating prices so much that no one buys them so.

As it was an option, i see no problem in removing it and fitted a wheel from a non airbag dicso1. It would be different for a model that is fitted as standard to all spec levels and therefore part of the crash performance of the vehicle.

Considering that too.

Does anyone know if you can remove the passenger side airbag and retrofit the "jesus handle" ?? looks like that aibag has taken the space occuiped by that but I don't know what is underneath the cover there.

You will find that it is illegal to remove or tamper with a fitted from new SRS air bag. The air bag is a supplmentary safety system to be be used with seat belts. All vehicles on national data base will have this recorded.

An aftermarket supplier like a large panel shop may well be able to remove and refit a new air bag but why from a business point of view would anyone want to discount this service after spending money to train and be approved to do this. As this is a very technical safety item there is also the matter of insurance premium to cover any work of this type.

Should you pull the fuse and disable the air bag this will completly disarm the device. an electric supply is the arming mechanisim.

In the D3 and new rangerover the seat belt pretentioner is also a part of the air bag system as will most of the new systems being used in new cars.
