I fitted the Enginesaver low coolant alarm today to my 300Tdi disco and thought I would pass on my experience for anyone else that may be interested.
Matbor has already posted a good explanation of fitting to a V8 in another thread, and fitting to a 300Tdi is very similar.
I figured out a way to collect the coolant when the top hose is removed. An ice cream container cut down to a tray, this slips under the top hose and drains into a funnel, which is connected to a hose that drains into a bucket under the car. Worked quite well. It means the same coolant can be re-used rather than risk mixing different types. About 2-3 litres drains out when just taking off the top hose.
I found the sensor relatively easy to fit, but keeping it in place while the top hose goes back on over it is a bit tricky. I found a bit of silicon spray on the spigot and inside of the hose helped. Also I found the sensor wasn't able to be mounted competely vertically because it rubbed on the metal cover that goes over the radiator /intercooler. Hence the sensor is on about a 30 degree angle but that should still be OK.

In the cabin I didn't want to drill holes ( I'll want to take the alarm unit out when I sell this car and transfer it to my next one ) so I mounted the LED in a space down on the right hand side. There was a plastic cover over a couple of holes that must be used for some option on the ES models. The LED fits in the round hole with a small metal washer behind it. There's a square hole to te right that I put the beeper in behind. At the moment I have just stuck a bit of flywire in front of it but not entirely happy with that and need to do something better. This isn't the ideal position for the LED as the steering wheel blocks it a bit, but a good compromise if you don/t want to pull the dash apart. Anyway the audio alarm is very loud.

The alarm gives a short self test "beep" when the ignition is turned on so it is not too intrusive.

good stuff wayne,
was it easy to install as I am looking at getting one for my Tdi. Were the instructions easy to follow? As a mechanic i make a good accountant so to speak...
Just noticed tonight that my overflow tank has a slight leak so i am going to get onto installing this alarm asap.

If you overflow is leaking you need to get it replaced - I think there is a new white plastic one that is better than the black one.Originally Posted by mns488

I'd say if you can do your own oil change and can fit your own CB etc then you could do this.

There have been a few variations of of low coolant alarm discussed on this site, both commercially avialable and home made ones. Each system has its own characteristics/advantages/disadvantages. For members of this forum it is good to have a choice I guess.

Jan, (the Entertainer)I think when you post these replies it would be more ethical to make itcrystal clear from the outset that you are the distributor for the EMS little black box product.That would be the right thing to do on the forum.
