The oil on oil for Disco V8

After close to 700,000 kms on Rangie motors I can recommend you use the best you can afford or change the oil very often, 5000 kms or less. I have found that the best oil in my vehicles is Castrol R synthetic. It seems to hold oil pressure for the longest change intervals and the motor runs really well with it. Mobil One may be as good but is too thin for my liking, high kms motor and as Ron said, leaks out of every seal and gasket. At present I am using Nulon fully synthetic 20w50 and it seems to be a good compomise between quality and cost. The Catrol was around $70 when I stopped using it.
Some people swear Penrite. I dont like the fact that it looses the ability to hold oil pressure after a few thousand kms, but maybe thats just my car.
I suggest ifyou are planning on keeping the car you use a quality fully synthetic oil. The motor will run better, the oil will last longer and thee will be a reduction in oil temp. The oil temp in my old Rangie dropped 10 degrees with a change from Mobil super to Mobil One.
By the way, I drive 500-100 kms a week and dont change the oil at specific km intervals but when there is a drop in the normal running oil pressure.

I am using Castrol Magnatec FMX in my Rangie, because that is what we have here at work. My odometer doesn't work, so my service interval is whenever I think it needs it. I usually judge it by the colour of the oil. If it isn't a lovely golden colour on the dipstick, out it comes. Filter every time.

magatec isnt available in the US of A because of the trade pratices laws over there... go figure.;....

ahh, yes it is, only it goes under another name, GTX Startup. Their marketing is exactly the same, and it uses a % of esters, which are polar by nature. Interstingly, Mobil 1 until recently used a % of esters (use Alkylated Napthalene instead now), mobil Delvac 1 uses a pretty high % of ester still, most of Motuls range , eg 300V are a total ester base, as is Redline, Fuchs 0W-20, etc, so they could all claim the same 'startup protection' of Magnatec.

and FWIW, oil colour isn't a very good indication of an oils 'cleanliness', 'life remaining' or otherwise.

Surely it is better to not leave it until it beomes a black or dark brown colour. I would have thought that the cleaner the oil the better. Less contaminants in there to do damage. Plus I get it all for a pretty good price...:angel:

I know you get it at a good price, so it's ok to change when you feel like it, but spare a thought for all us diesel owners if we changed the oil when it started to discolour, the world would have no oil reseves by now :lol2:
To give you an idea of looks vs testing, the last oil test on our Patrol returned wear metals at an astonishing low rate and soot at 0.7% which is still pretty low at 21,000km on the oil which was pitch black when I drained it last night, just like it looked at 1000km.....
Funny thing is it appears some additives in the oil really only start to work with some heat/pressure. Quite a few tsets I've seen now show reduced wear/particle #'s at 5 and 10,000km than at 1,000km

if you really want to check for contaminents you can do a 'blotter' test where you dribble a little oil down a white card, IIRC sitting at around a 45* angle and check for bits in the track left, or you can do a spot check like these.

That is one of the reasons why I don't have a diesel, horrible oily things they are LOL. My Rangie is due for another change now, before I drive to Adelaide in 2 weeks time. It will get another one when I come back. That will give it about 4000km between changes, the most it has had since I bought it. IIRC, this will be about the 6th change in about 14 months.

:lol2: I used to say that too till I acquired the 'fender. Dad used to rave about diesels, and I used to just mutter bloody oil burners. :D
BTW, mines an ex-BFC one from up your way, and would've been into Suttons at some stage, even though it was based at Tennant Ck.

A lurker on here grabbed it for me, and knows you too as you supply their service bits. ;)
