Yep, that's why I said until recently. I think the later ones used the same 4-pin diff as used on the rear of the P38A - they aren't the same as the Disco 1, they are a stronger diff (the early P38A with TC only on the rear, had 2-pin diffs in the front and 4-pin in the rear). I can't check part nos. as I don't have a parts catalogue for post-2002 Defenders.

Hi All again,

New question re these bearings. Spoke to Central Coast Bearings, they have found these bearings (RTC3429). Apparently the box includes both the 2 bearings and seals. Price was around $93 per set but I remember seeing some posts about these timken bearings being around $17. Am I not remembering right or were these other ones an inferior brand?

Sorry Pete not me - I'm not into greased bearings.

My 'fix' for bearings is to remove the small axle oil seal, drill a 3mm dia hole in the bottom of the stub axle between the two bearings, replace the grease wiper with a double lipped double garter sping oil seal (as fitted to early Rangies) and allow the bearings to be lubricated with oil from the diff. This will eliminate 90% of your bearing problems/failures.

Hi Roger & All,

First, a big thanx for all the great advice and tips today from everyone!

Ended up buying the bearing and double lip seals from GB&B and because I needed to order three more sets they gave me a price of only $70 per complete set!

Also, I did end up drilling into the hub through the space between to two races and putting in a grease nipple. Now I know there are those of you out there that feel oil is the way to go, but having looked at the "3mm bleed through" option, I was unable to see how on the '93 hubs that I have, that this would be possible, there just seems to be no space at all to allow this option.

However, I'm happy with the grease nipple, it worked a treat upon assembly and I'll check it agin in about a week and then re-fill every 6 months just to be sure.

Anyway, thanx all, it made my job alot easier having the advice and knowledge of those that had done it before.

Next week or so I think I might give my front inner hub seals a go!!
