Im gonna use it for fitting an overdrive, also hydraulic pump for winch could be nice sitting there.
Cheers,

My owners manual for the 2001 defender has a wholoe section devoted to the pto point on the transfer case and how a range of tools can be run off this, such as pumps etc.
After a search of the forum I have read a few pieces about guys intending to set-up a pto winch, as opposed to electric but little else.
Does anyone use this feature for anything other than winches. Reason I ask is I enquired with the dealer about running a external water pump and he looked at me like I was bonkers.
Would be really keen to know what it can be used for and what tools are available?
Thanks in advance.

Once you price the bits for a PTO winch you'll lose interest pretty quick, e.g. a Thomas shaft drive was about $4000 - without the winch itself.
Maxidrive make a hydraulic pump for the LT230. A couple of outfits make an overdrive too. Depends what you want to do.

Im going to be fitting a hydraulic pump to power other hydraulic motors to run other stuff in the deefer.
In the back of kermit when i finish him the pto will run the rear mounted winch and have additional take offs for a genset a real aircompressor and a pump

Sorry for my ignorance on this subject, but I take it you can run more than a winch off the pto but it requires some permanent engineering to run these rather than simply using it to power equipment directly?
The way landrover promote it you would think you just needed a attachment aand presto bang you've got a portable power source for a pump, compressor etc.
I think these are basically a throw back to their primary use as an agricultural vehicle, where you could in theory run even a threshing machine off of the power take off point.
For a farmer, it could prove useful to be able to do a number of jobs around the farm with your portable power plant. I have not met anyone who ever actually put anything on it. I would be interested to hear if anyone has done something usful with it. I was contemplating a winch myself, until I saw this site - then thought my XD9000 would do me for now..

one of the guys who owned a farm down the road from my pops had a diesel SWB SIII with essentially a fire pump mounted off the pto in the rear of the well deck. hed roll the pick up hose on it and he used to use it as essentally a mobile pump for irrigating from dams when the wind didnt want to play the game or if there was some other problem... it was probabley the most abused LR IVe seen ever, balding flat tyres with tread seperation not one working light bout the only thing it had going for it was a sort of sound engine that got the oil checked every 6 or seven months and when it used to over heat in the summer he just used to park it nose first in the dam till the radiator was in the water..
Itd invariably get bogged so hed just yank it out with a tractor.

Great info - thanks Tusker, an doverdrive is an application I hadn't really considered, although that does not look too expensive.
As an aside, I too re-read the manual on pto point, and it does infer that the dealer can supply "lots of attachments" and named the obvious ones. They do make it sound like plug and play. I called my local dealer, and they could not offer a single pto device of any description, offering only the sugestion to contact my local LR club...
