    engine temp too low

    hey

i have a mechanical temp guage fitted in the thermostat housing filler

the engine normally runs around 90 degrees and upto 95 degrees

for the last week or so the engine temp does not rise above 80 degrees, a little to cold i would think

could it be that the thermostat is stuck all the way open???

It certainly could be - easiest way to check is start the car from cold, and either hold the top hose - or if you have a temp probe or temp gun continually measure the temp of the top hose - after the stat - if the temp gradually rises to 'normal' then it would tend to suggest that the stat is open all the time.

........but if the temp on the hose rises much slower that the engine/mechanical temp gauge - and then quickly rises (as the stat opens) then that would suggest that the stat is working normally - and if the temps are vastly different from the probe/gun to the mechanical gauge - then I would suspect the sender or the gauge is faulty.

On a V8 RR Classic the stat should open between 85 and 89, TDi RR Classic the same

Discovery TD5 starts to open at 82 and is fully open at 96

Discovery V8 SII is the same

Disco TDi SI is the same as a TDi RR
Disco V8 SI is the same as V8 RR Classic

Not sure what engine you have or if they should be the same on a DEF, but if ..........

So if't it running at 80 then that also suggests the stat is b***erd or the temp gauge/sender

interesting, i was ignoring what i thought was a problem since i installed the mechanical temp gauge after/on top of the thermostat, every now and than the temp gauge would not move at all till i was upto 10km into my drive than it would shoot straight up to somewhere between 70 and 80 degrees. this would mean on these days the thermostat was working correctly, would that be the right assumption.

    i think i will buy a thermostat

i have a 300tdi, did i read somewhere that i should only use a genuine part

I have heard that 200Tdi and 300Tdi thermostats are identical except that they open at different temperatures. Land Rover stock seperate part numbers for them.

RE "i have a 300tdi, did i read somewhere that i should only use a genuine part"

YES!! I had a similar problem with the engine being too cold, replaced it with a part of "dubious quality" and now it runs too hot! I am soon to replace it with a genuine one. I think also that I fitted a 300Tdi one which opens at a higher temperature than the 200Tdi one

yep, probably an old post of mine. I did a comparo between Oz aftermarket t/stats and OE, including the revered Tridon brand, and found the aftermarket ones by-pass valve having the incorrect reach/size. Found a similar situation with Nissan Patrol turbo t/stats, the actual valve was miles smaller on aftermarket ones compared to OE.
