    Cracking Defender

    Ok Heres a good one for you to work out.
    97TDI 130
    I seem to have a small problem but buggered if i can find it I've got all new maxidrive axles CVs Crown wheels pinoins bearings pretty much the lot All fitted by LRA...
    A cracking noise like a uni or CV From around drivers side front wheel but its just one crack (I've checked the wheel nuts are tight thats all good)Seems to happen when wheels articulate .
    I,ve jacked the front end up put it in gear so the wheels where driving and turned the steering from one lock to the other no sluring or clicking sounds nothing just sounded normal.
    all shocks and steering damper are just on 12months old all OME ..i,m starting to think its a spring or mount .(i do about 10klms a day on gravel.)
    Everything looks tight no worn or broken boots on steering rod arms, thats were it sounds like its coming from, Around the steering box but if the cars sitting still and you turn the wheel from lock to lock while on the ground under load theres nothing and I,ve removed the sway bars so it can,t be them .. Ok well I'm sure to find it soon probable when the wheel falls off i just don,t want to make the 4, 1/2 hour drive back to LRA....

    check your shocker rubbers and the holes the shockers bolt thru they can wear if the shockers have been loose for a while
    cvs normaly click when they are worn

    Check the tightness of the bolts at the front of the hockey sticks (radius arms) where they bolt to the axle housing.

    They have to be bloody tight.

    no worries i,ll try that in the morning i havn't hopped under there with a socket yet..the radius arms do there have replacable bushes or are they all one...
    The shocker rubbers are all still in new condition but could the shocker still chop out the hole thats what i think i might be looking at something to do with the shocks how do you know if the ball joints (if thats what there called) on the steering rods are gone there a sealed type not greasable...

    (1) the bush,s in the radius arms are replaceable
    (2) the ball joints if worn will have movement up and down and sideways if worn
    (3) if the shocks have not been done up tight they will chop out the holes

    Replaceable bushes but you need an hydraulic press to get them in/out.

    It's easier to take them to a LR specialist to get done.

    a single crack is most likely the radius arms.......

    if it were the shocks it would be doing it constantly......




    to eliminate a lot of loosesness and noises in a landy....
    every so often.........you need to crawl underneath with your big spanners and sockets
    and tighten everything you can see.......you will be surprised at the difference this will make
    if it has never been done.......

    and dont forget to check the propshafts too.....

    If aftermarket springs, they can move on the perches when articulating and create a godawful 'crack' as well as clangs and bangs. This scares the bejeesus out of my missus when she comes for a ride in my car.
    Check the panhard rod to chassis clevis bolt. Get underneath the vehicle, hold the clevis and rock the vehicle side to side to feel for any movement. Every eighteen months or so it goes 'crack' usually when cornering
    hard on the bitumen.
