Thanks for the advice, I am a bit of a bush mechanic, so you know what I will be trying first, here goes the jack. I'll let you know what happens. Maybe in two weeks as I am off to Fraser Is.
    Cheers

IMO... It's only fit for scrap now.

I agree, and as Zook says get a new housing and transplant the internals. On a D2 there are many little things conected to the dif and axel housings ie ABS,TC sensors, brake lines etc. Unfortunately a D2 is not as basic as a Lotus cortina (I wish it was sometimes)

Alternatively you could use the opportunity to get lockers and new axles.

    apparently it works ok.

    Pretty much like this:

This is using a portapower rather than a bottle jack, but the idea is the same.

It's the method I used to ensure the housing doesn't bend when welding on the mounting block for Maxi lockers, but can be just as easily used to straighten a bent one.

Contrary to popular belief, they are quite easy to bend (and straighten). According to Mal Storey, many Defender Salisburys aren't straight right from the factory.

Just fit a second hand housing.
You could change everything over in half a day and they are cheap.

Anyway do you know whats bent? The housing or the Swivel balls?

    They can both bend

EDIT: Its a rear diff, so obviously the housing

Sals rears are expensive, RR/Disco housings are cheap.

Even less time to change a rear.

Best way I have found is porta power as previously suggested but its not even worth the effort.
