    Disco 1 door hinge inserts

    For those who wondered what their door hinges look like:



    My drivers door was sagging a bit, and I wanted to see what was involved in re-setting it. Without moving the other bits, I discovered that it was the copper inserts of the hinge that are worn



    Has anybody ever seen replacement inserts anywhere?

    The post section of the hinge is 8mm, the hole 10mm, and the flange is 15mm in dia. If I had a a lathe I'd love to try and make some up. ( For those wondering, you are looking at part MXC2164 - the whole hinge-, retail $26.60 @ Trivett LR) (Its opposite mounted on the door is MXC2166 $17.09) ( The bottom set is MXC5770 $33.90, and another MXC2166).

    They are probably phosphor bronze bushes. They may also be sintered to hold oil,

    Lubricate often?

    You might get some at a bearing supply house.

    Horse, stable door, bolted.

    A good example of not walking around with an oil can now & then ain't it?

    I have even drilled small holes in the rear door hinges to at least give the hinges a fighting chance.

    I plead not guilty by reason of prior ownership: I've only had my disco 18mths, and the door has been like that since I got it. I even use WD 40 every now and then. I like Ron's idea, I'll report in due course if I find anything at CBC.

    I didn't mean for that to sound like I was having a pop at you personally, langy. I was generalising.
    It just proves that the odd dribble of oil can save these things.

    I mean to say, hasn't leaking oil kept our Land Rovers from rusting all these years? Well, mostly.

    They don't rust where the oil is.

    Langy, you might get something suitable but which may need reaming to fit the pins. Don't drill them, you want a really good fit. Reamers are something most of us don't have (I've only got a couple) so you might need to get them done by a motor engineering mob, probably a head specialist.

    If you can't match the outside diameter go slightly larger and enlarge the hinge to fit.

    I've used a lot of these bushes in the past in model applications (helicopters, race boats, etc). Some I've made myself (I have a lathe) from stock I've bought but in plain phosphor bronze, not sintered.

    Thankyou gentlemen... fear not as I suppose I should have used a smilie to indicate thus:

    And, for Ron, I am intimatly and personally aquainted with the work-related figure-of-speech reamers. I also know what a mechanical related reamer is.
    If I can find a $1 bushing to avoid buying $95 worth of hinge, I will be impressed. Will advise in due course.
