    Go Figure

For the last 3 years my Disco II TD5 has had an strong vibration at approx 2000 rpm in all gears including park and neutral

I'vd tried every thing the cure it, from new engine mounts to having the torque converter rotated/balanced etc.

Nothing would fix it. I bought an injector the other day under the assumption that it was quiet likely a faulty injector even though a power balance test did not reveal anything

My car is booked in for this week Wednesday to get it fitted on the injector we though was most suspect

Yesterday morning I was driving my bus thinking how crap it felt with that strong vibration. Lst night I had to zip out and noticed the vibration was completely gone.

Not just diminished, but gone, like never before. In the past it has had times when it has fluctuated from Ok to crap, but never gone completely.

Now it has just dissapeared without even the slightest sign of it being there.

I am confused, stoked and a little pessimistic. I hope it stays that way.

Any ideas as to what could have changed????

If the problem stays away, I'll be selling that spare injector

My two cents worth, john, which I know sounds nuts, but........

Something fell off, something which caused the unbalance; what ever it was, was in the rotating bits of the motor. Maybe, just maybe, there was a lump of mud or similar stuck in the fan, which just maybe could have glued itself in there somewhere, until it finally and completely dried out and fell off. You identified it at about 2000 rpm which sounds very harmonic, so by illogical reasoning maybe the unbalancer was in the harmonic balancer -howzat for reasoning?

Don't worry about - unless you overheat, then it was the fan, and its gone into orbit.

    Strange things happen...

A similar thought has occured to me as well. If so what ever it was has been stuck there for the last 3-4 years

The other reason I thought it may have been an injector is that when I would put a bottle of injector cleaner in the fuel tank, the vibration would diminish somewhat.

I'll be stoked if it stays away. The injector replacement was going to be the last option before I sold the damn thing. Its not been a reliable bus

Interesting. I've had a similar vibration since the vehicle was about 18 months old (now 4.5 years). Never could convince the dealer that there was anything wrong, "vehicle characteristic" was the usual explanation!

I knew it wasn't normal because originally it was very smooth. I just put up with it now because it is not that strong, more of an annoyance.

Hope whatever is causing mine falls off too.

What's been the main problem(s)? The TD5, or has it been other "non-engine" things?

roly...i think is on the right track........

harmonic balancer or engine mounts will give those symptoms......
if it was the drivetrain....it wouldnt happen if you werent moving......

the harmonic balancer is just two bits of steel with a rubber ring in the middle to dampen vibration.....
these can come loose and slip around to cause problems.......

or the engine mounts wear or come loose and allow the engine mounting brackets to contact the chassis brackets.......

    check these two items first......
