The diesel rattle is caused by diesel detonating in the cylinder so i would have thought higher compression (hotter air) would have reduced diesel rattle , correct me if i'm wrong. If so the engine you compared it to may have really good compression and so you may find you engine improves as the rings and everything bed in.

You can tell this as his wife drives it for the family car.
Are you sure you have the original engine as some people swapped V8's for 4bd1 truck engine.
Let us know when you sort it out as it might help mine.

Not sure I can help but I have exactly the same problem in my isuzu county, its got to the stage where I dont want to drive it anymore as the noise makes it very tiring to drive :(. Everyone laughs or says they're all like that when I bring it up. I have a mate with a similar county and his is so quiet, its not mush noisier than a "normal" car. I have had mine looked at by at least 2 diesel mechanics in Brisbane who say it runs perfectly (they must mean perfectly noisily), tappets and timing all checked and OK has underbonnet sound deadening and the quiet rocker cover. One diesel mechanic said he could make it quieter by adjusting the injector timing (not sure which way) but I would lose power and therefore economy (being a student economy is high on my list of importance), it would be harder to start and would blow some smoke. So whats a man supposed to do? The only difference between my mates quiet county and mine is his is gutless (top speed of 90-100km/h) and mine feels similar in power to the old 3.5 petrol. Am thinking I might get the timing adjusted to make it quieter to see what its like, can always change back if I dont like it, will let you know the details/results.
Very interested in any solutions you come up with .

I just though of it that it may be the grade of oil you are using.
When I got my stage one I went to the cost effective maintenance people and got some flushing concentrate.
It seemed quieter of it was cleaned

If you live in Brisbane you could just take the vehicle to them.
My dad has a td5 disco 2 and the grade of oil makes a big difference to it.
Just had a thought. Have you checked what temperature your engine is running at? Discovered the thermostat was hadit in mine the other day. The colder it runs the more it will rattle. Plus if you let idle it out of gear you can hear the gears banging together. Easily solved by pushing in the clutch.
Two good points - I have had to replace my thermostat twice in the last 300,000km (only repairs needed on the engine itself - don't talk about Nippon-Denso electrics, I think they are almost as bad as Lucas), most recently a month ago, although I did not notice the noise change, mainly to get the heater to work.Quote:

Check the Cam timing, one of the guys doing eng 4 last week (rebuild ISUZU 3.9) got the cams timed one tooth out then timed the injector of the crank pully engine started and ran but sounded like it was running on explosives rather than diesel.
Apparently he had the valves opening and closing early so part of the combustion was being vented out the exhaust before the piston had past BDC.
one of the giveaways was the speed at which the exhaust manifold heated up...
dunno if thats the case for you but worth a check.
