Would you really be driving at 120kph on a gravel Rd though? I haven't the luxary of a high speed CDL but the traction control doesn't engage when your driving at a reasonable speed. If I wanted to drive fast on gravel I would have bought an old mini cooper or a WRX.

As for drifting

I only drift in the mud, at low speeds.

Any reason you went with a cdl over fixing the visco?
I just ask, as I recently acquired a 89 Vogue with a Visco, But have not really Heard much about them?

you forgot roll oversteer. Easy to achieve. Turn in, wait for it to fall over, out goes the bum while nailing it.......
or trail brake into corner left foot braking while using a fair bit of throttle to keep turbo spooled then release brake....:angel:

2.5 tonne sideways at 100km/h is a touch silly. :wasntme:

but I still prefer driving gravel without the CDL engaged. The longer wheel base of a 130 also makes things much more benign.

I think the comment about engaging the CDL whenever they leave the bitumen refers to trails, rather than good dirt roads. Lets face it if you are doing 100Kph + you dont rally want too much "loss of traction" surfaces.

I tend to engage my CDL when ever I get onto dirt that restricts you to say less than 40/50kph.

Definately engaged with low.

I changed over because everyone says the lt230 is stronger and better off road and so far i agree. Now i can lock the center diff where as the viscous would only transfer power, a bit like a good LSD (i think). And now i have a rear locker i want to get the full benifit of it.

The conversion wasn't much more than just replacing the viscous, and the added advantage is that you can get a low milage one from a series 1 disco like i did.

Today i went up to Wallhalla and did a few river crossings. It didn't feel like it slipped one bit. The traction was fantastic.
Well worth it.:D

As others have mentioned when on a dirt track / Trail when it looks like traction will be lost.
I just put it in when I select low range.
