Jeez! I've just got a price on a timing cover from BMI $2265 list!
Ron
Yesterday, my P38A blew the oil pressure relief valve out of the timing cover and dumped the contents of the sump all over the road. I've found the valve and the spring but not the retaining plug nor circlip. The circlip is the least of my worries but I need the plug.
This part isn't serviced separately so it looks like I'm up for a new timing cover, oil pump, and pressure relief valve - about $1000 plus labour.
If I can get an old cover I can get the plug. I don't have the dimensions to even get one turned up (but I could if I could borrow a timing cover).
Any help would be appreciated. Please call me, I won't be near the PC today.

Surely you have the original cover - the thread can be measured - I have a tool that came with my tap and die set that measures threads
thread pitch guage.....
Does it matter one is a serpintine belt the others pulleys?Originally Posted by loanrangie
No, totally different. The oil pump on the 4.0/4.6 is built into the cover and is driven directly from the crank nose, not via a skew gear. The pump is not serviced separately.Originally Posted by loanrangie

I'm not sure what you mean - there is no thread so I can't use my thread pitch gauge. The plug is a push fit into the hole and is retained by a circlip. It has an O-ring to seal it.Originally Posted by ladas
I assume from what you have said, the previous pumps use a threraded plug. I'll have to have a look at an earlier engine workshop manual.
The problem with trying to turn up a plug is that I don't know how deep it should be as this will affect the tension on the spring and therefore the relief pressure.
If you have RAVE, have a look at the new RR and then the engine overhaul manual for the 4.0/4.6.

No, only that the pumps are totally different.Originally Posted by RR5L

I bought a brand new timing case/oil pump/pressure relief valve this arvo and will fit it this weekend.![]()
Tony (user name Tony) has a second hand pump but it's missing the plug. If he happens to locate the plug I'll, hopefully, be able to get the dimensions to make up a replacement - then I can put the old pump to the 4.6 block I took out of the P38A

I've heard of people adapting the lower half of a Commodore/Buick v6 timing cover and oil pump to Rover 4.6 short motors. They weld it to the top half of a Rover 3.5 timing cover. The oil pumps are similar and fit the Rover crankshaft.
It may be worth checking the pressure relief valve and plug from the v6 to see if it will fit the 4.6.
