I checked and you are right, a 235/85 needs to be fitted on a minimum of a 6 inch wide rim. Seems that I was previously misinformed.
A quick glance at a ruler shows that a 235mm tyre width is 45mm wider than a 7.50" wide tyre. What you are thinking of is the overall diameter, which is about 18mm greater - not very significant compared to the diameter of around 800mm (2.25%), but the 45mm is a lot compared to the rim width of 140mm - 32%. You cannot (safely) put 235 tyres on a 5.5 rim, although I have seen it done.Originally Posted by Phoenix

Some side wall 'bagging' (and increased possibility of side wall staking) will be experienced (even at normal road pressures) when fitting 235x85x16 tyres to the minimum acceptable 6 inch rims - better when fitted to 7 inch rims.Originally Posted by Phoenix

That depends on the specs set out by the tyre manufacturer. Some will say min 6" rim required, some will specify different. Cooper for example specify the min rim width for 235/85 being 5.50", so their tyres are quite legal for standard Defender rims.Originally Posted by Phoenix

currently in the defence force all 1/2 trailer rims need to have trailer use only painted on them, i believe it because the rims fitted are from series vehicals, from memory all rims fitted to 110's had to be checked and non 110 rims had to be removed and marked trailer use only.
there are also two different offsets on the trailers which the truckies never take notice of as they are always putting two different offset rims on the trailers. gotta love those little red stickers
JD was correct the above information is not accurate, there are lots of different Series rims and some are UK manufactured and others Australian manufactured although often with the same part number.Originally Posted by UncleHo
However one question that has to be considered is that none of the series and early defender rims are designed for tubeless tyres. The ones for tubless tyres have a ridge running circumfrentially around the rim just inside where the bead sits. If you dont have the safety rims you should run tubes.
Now back the the Series rims. (The part number is usually stamped on flat between the wheel studs)
* the 1948 rims are 4 1/2" wide, no branding on the flats & valve stem hole in the slot.
* 231601 - 5" wide, '49 - series 3 88" rims 49-53 UK manuf. only 53 on UK & Aust manuf.
* 272309 - 5 1/2" wide, 28/16" offset, '58 - series 3 109" rims, 7.50 tyres, UK or Aust manuf.
* 569690 - 5 1/2" wide, 21/16" offset, series 2a - series 3 109" rims UK manuf. only, 7.50 tyres (often called English rims)
* 526753 - 15" rim for 8.20 - 9.00 tyres UK manuf. US market.
* 543384 - 6 1/2" wide, no offset UK manuf. SIIA Forward Control 9.00 tyres
* 569204 - 6 1/2" wide, 13/16 offset UK Manuf. One Ton Land Rover 9.00tyres
* 569203 - 6 1/2" wide, aprox 3/4" offset UK manuf. SIIB Forward Control 9.00 tyres
* NRC7578PM - 5 1/2" wide, Unknown offset, series 3/stage 1/County, UK and Aust Manuf. 7.50 tyres
Only the very late series 3/Stage 1 rims (AYG-8108) had the raised ring between the studs. Whether it was 6.0" I am unaware.
Hope this helps

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
IME it is better to fit tyres to the narrowest rim possible, as the rim is protected by the tyre.Originally Posted by Xtreme

Well Diana, mine are 5.5 and my opinion, for what it's worth and from advice, 235/85 should (that's should) be fitted to a 6 inch rim at least.Originally Posted by Lotz-A-Landies

Even this list is incomplete - there was the 15" Australian wheel fitted to the Game, and the split rims optional for Series 1 and 2 and probably special order through to Series 3. And probably some others as well.Originally Posted by Lotz-A-Landies
