    series 1 disco brakes

In the final throws of deciding whether to keep the disco or go to a rangie now i am not doing a 1000k a week....

the brakes on my series 1 disco are solid discs, can ventilated discs be fitted at a resonable price?

and do they offer much of a performance increase over the solids in sustained braking and hard offroad work ?

being an auto and pulling a 1.5 tonne trailer with override brakes it tends to work the brakes to the limit.

this weekend sojourns to peachtrees and the run (read slow run!) home on the jimna-bellthorpe road saw the brakes on the disco boil much sooner than i thought they would or should.... and on a near 45% slope.. lucky i was in low low and the handbrake is in good nick :P

suppose i should put electric brakes on the trailer........ but that can have major downsides as well...

hmmmmm the choices and decisions to be made....

    any wisdom appreciated.....

I would start by changing brake pads. There are brake pads, and then there are brake pads. Apparently the Bendix are good from what I hear, but I have found the EBC Greenstuff 2000 series pads to be outstanding (not 6000 series 4x4 pads which are crap).

    Dave,

DBA make replacement rotors for D1s, vented , sloted and cross drilled if you want as well, I think they start around $250 a pr, could be wrong about the price tho

i have bendix 4x4 pads on it now.... might try and track down the others...

vented discs would need the wider calipers i imagine....

i think the later discos with the vented rotors just had a bigger spacer between the two halves of the caliper.....

There's a kit available from the various LR parts suppy places to convert standard front [only!] calipers to enable you to fit ventilated [and drilled and/or slotted - it all helps!] discs........they're just spacers - same as what LR originally did when they had to improve performance back to where it was before the discontinuation of asbestos compositon pads ........"Greenstuff" brand or blue Kevlar pads are excellent.....avoid metallic and semi-metallic pads - the're too harsh on disc wear!

Although not all brand come with sensors and leads for the pad wear warning lamps on dash!

With the Greenstuff, there are 2 types, the 6000 series and the 2000 series. Make sure you get the 2000 series which are the proper greenstuff pad material. The 6000's are the old blacks with a coat of green paint and also marketed as greenstuff - but they're not!
