    Disco door seals

What's the go with the door seals on the discos ? Recently returned from a trip to the N.T. & after doing a water crossing (fairly deep) I noticed the carpet was wet. It was only then that I realised that the door seals have 2 gaps at the bottom. What were L/R thinking when they did this?

Does anyone have a good remedy for this? Thanks.

4mm or 6mm fly screen rubber and a can of silicon spray through the seals then cut some older seal up to fill the gap.

I believe the gap is to allow air to escape when doors are being shut although someone may correct me if I'm wrong.

I've always wondered why LR did this as well. However I never had any leaks unless I ceased forward momentum in a river . I just filled them in with a beed of black silcon sealent and its OK now. I did this on my D2 and also on the D1 I had (and it went through several crossings that were over the wipers and I didn't get any cabin leaks at all)

I had same problem. I found that there are smaller dia rubber inserts that fit in the main seal and they slip away from the gap. Manouvre them back into the gap and silicon them in position. Then use (black) silicon to make the area as smooth as possible-did the trick for me after heaps of crossings up the cape recently.

Yep, it was to let the water out!

For pre'04 D2's you need to use the fly screen rubber as someone said already. It is possible to thread it through using a bit of wire although you may have to do an additional slit somwhere up the top.

For the D2 update they strengthened the door seal so there are no problems with these.

I just filled the 2 gaps at the bottom with black silastic and it has been great. Just make sure you leave the doors open for the night to let it dry before you go testing it out. And don't forget the rear door as well.

I went one stage further and got a rear door seal then cut it up according to the ratio of side door opening and replaced this section of the side door seals. Work's a real treat as this seal is a lot more effective than the standard side door ones. It has an extra lip seal on it as well.

On the weekend I went to Clarke Rubber and found some 10mm solid core sponge rubber "rod". I cut this into 3 inch lengths and poked this inside the door seals so it covers the gaps, and then sealed it in with black silicon. The 10mm rod is thicker i think than the screen door tubing and the tubes Lr put in, and seems to match in quite well.
